Best engine sound - for all you car nuts

Hrm. I like my car, now that it has a sweet exhaust. It's a 100% stainless system made by stebro, who also makes exhausts for Ferrari and Lambo. Here's my buddy's SVX, it has the same muffler that I do, but mine sounds deeper, a tad louder, and more evil, since I have the full system from the front cats back.

It's a flat six, so it sounds similar to a porsche... but less hectic, and more sinister. I love it. When it idles it sounds like a really mean V8, when you're accelerating it sounds like a porsche, and when you're at high RPMS it sounds like an exotic. Plus when you let off the gas on the highway it makes this weird burbly noise that you can hear go from front to back. It's sweeeeeeet.

I'll get a better clip this summer. It sounds amazing.

ferrari f355. For some reason I just think it sounds slightly more beautiful than the following 360 modena or f430. I have yet to hear anything quite so striking. I have yet to hear a bad v8 though honestly the worst is luxury cars which have quiet v8s and those don't sound bad even. American v8s sound raw and powerful, German v8s sound smooth and silky, and Italian v8s are imo stunning. v12s and v10s are also good in a different way of course.

In no particular order, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, the Enzo Ferrari (which I've heard in person and is just spectacular in every sense. Really though, I can't think of a bad sounding Ferrari), the Ascari A10, any of the V8 F1 engines (not too fond of the V10's, I don't like that overtone, the V8 sounds a lot more pristine), though I do like V10's in road cars, like the Carrera GT, the old air-cooled 911 flat sixes, the WRC Impreza's (I may be partial since I drive a Legacy and can't get enough of the boxer rumble), and the Porsche 917. Watching "Le Mans" and hearing that engine scream is just aur-gasmic.

Best engine sounds that I've had the opportunity to hear in person at a NHRA or IHRA drag racing event would be a 500 cid nitro burning Hemi engine in the Top Fuel or Funny car class. Both videos below show the nitro engine being warmed up in the pits burning alcohol. When they're staged at the starting line and a 90% nitro load is fed thru the fuel lines, the engines really roar to life and sounds a lot more wicked. You will not only hear the sounds but feel it vibrate against your entire body. The nitro fumes from the engine will burn your eyes and nose.

The other best engine sound I've heard at a NHRA or IHRA drag racing event would be a alcohol burning Hemi engine in the Pro Mod class. The video below shows a 511 cid blown Hemi alcohol engine in a chromoly steel tube chassis Pro Mod Dodge Viper being tuned:

Audi Quattro S1 [many good vids on youtube], I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

That would do for me, I would say it is more terrifying. I like the Escort MK II sound too, but Impreza 555 may be my favorite, love the boxer sound. The current Impreza sounds like a tractor or a hoovercraft.

Yup! Good its summer soon, drag racing season will start again and I can go and watch absolutely gorgeus cars launch insanely fast and feel their roar in my stomach.

I've seen Top Fuel cars once before too, last summer actually. Their sound is really something. Body vibrates, ground shakes and it looks like that even air vibrates around those cars. Hearing damage quaranteed if you are careless.
