Now, before my headfi membership gets revoked, let me clarify that these 'phones are in no way for myself. But a friend needs a cheap pair ($50 is stretching his budget, he'd prefer $30 or $40) so I'm wondering what the best value in that segment is. $50 all-in is an absolute maximum price. Thanks.

The k81dj seems popular. I don't like the bass-heavy thing, though. Lotsa Koss stuff in that range. And there are always 'mallows if "he" wants to stick it in "his" ear. *wink*wink*nudge*nudge*

The BeyerDynamic DT 231 can be found for 55 USD, and they are great.
Otherwise I can recommend the Sennheiser HD 201.

Seriously, the Sennheiser PX100 and lots of duct tape make the best closed cans at your price point.

Now if we could get someone to go over to Senn's offices and start smacking the engineers on the back of their hands until they start making proper head straps...

I dont know why this double posted. I clicked it one time, then a message came up that i can only post once in 30 seconds and to wait 15 seconds to post. It was my first post all night!!! Anyway, i waited over 15 seconds, clicked the post button, and i seen it was posted twice, so this WAS the second post and i edited it with this message.

At that price point, I recommend Cresyn CS-HP600.

Quite nice lows and mids, without the heavy bass of the AKG 81DJ. More durable than the AKGs too. Maybe lacking in the highs, but for the price, hard to beat.
