To what and how is this DAC to be hooked up to?

It's connecting to a Sony receiver and a pair of Klipsch speakers, via optical.

So is a computer the source, that connects to the Sony receiver?
So the optical is connected to the computer's on-board audio?
what model is the Sony receiver?

The Asus Xonar DX or D1 sound card, used $50, comes with the CS4398 DAC chip.
Which should be a fair bit better then the DAC chip built into the motherboard.
Plus the Xonar DX/D1 comes with Dolby Headphone surround sound.
Just run an analog cable (mini-jack to RCA) from the Xonar to the Sony.

SMSL SD-1955 DAC, $100, ships from China, AD1955 DAC chip,
use an RCA to RCA cable, between DAC and sony

HRT Musicstreamer, USB DAC, $150

ODAC, USB DAC, $150

I agree with the sound card suggestions above, especially if you're using those 5.1 type home theatre systems.

Actually the source is the TV, connected to a PS3 and cable box. The optical out of the TV will connect to the DAC, which will connect to the Sony receiver via RCA cables, model STR-DH100. I bought a used Denon receiver with a built in DAC and optical inputs which works great, but unfortunately does not fit the small space I have. The Sony receiver is less deep.

The SMSL SD-1955 looks like it would fit the bill. Thanks!
