I need something fairly bright for home theater. What is good and cheap? Thanks.

It's connecting to a Sony receiver and a pair of Klipsch speakers, via optical.

The Asus Xonar DX or D1 sound card, used $50, comes with the CS4398 DAC chip.
Which should be a fair bit better then the DAC chip built into the motherboard.
Plus the Xonar DX/D1 comes with Dolby Headphone surround sound.
Just run an analog cable (mini-jack to RCA) from the Xonar to the Sony.
SMSL SD-1955 DAC, $100, ships from China, AD1955 DAC chip,
use an RCA to RCA cable, between DAC and sony

I agree with the sound card suggestions above, especially if you're using those 5.1 type home theatre systems.

Actually the source is the TV, connected to a PS3 and cable box. The optical out of the TV will connect to the DAC, which will connect to the Sony receiver via RCA cables, model STR-DH100.
