I wouldn't suggest going for the XB700. For that price, you can get some pretty decent new Grado SR80i's. Eh, whichever you choose, all the best, and stay away from head-fi. I fear for your wallet :x

Get the XB500; it has improved bass (both in quantity and in quality) over XB300; the XB700 only has improved highs over XB500, bass is similar between those two.

Oddly, I have to disagree with Mal.  It really depends on your taste and what you're listening to.  I bought both the XB500 and the XB700 to see which I like better.  I thought I liked the XB500 better at first, but in the end it's really only good for dubstep.  After about a day and a half, I just eq'd up the XB700 about +3db at 50hz and it produces almost exactly as much bass as the XB500, but it's MUCH better for drub and bass, hiphop, and rock.

If you'd be willing to go with in-ear 'phones, I've got a set of Munitio Tek9s I'll sell you in your price range...they produce both more and higher quality bass than either of these cans; I just can't use them as I have incredibly tiny and oddly shaped ear canals.  I suffered through it for a couple weeks anyway, if that tells you anything about how good they are.

Get the XB700, SUPER BASS<, if they are amped even a litle the bass is even more monsterous and the mids and highs shine like a star in the sky.,

I have done some research and i have seen most recommend the 500s over the 700s. What the 500s lack in instrument separation and to some degree soundstage, they make up for it with a more in-your-face sound signature.
