I have owned the following headphones....HD555, HD595, HD580, HD600, HD650, Denon D2000 and a Beyerdynamic pair but cant remember what model (One of the better models though). My amps / sources have been.....Nuforce Udac, Little Dot Dac_II, Audio GD Compass, Little Dot MK III.

My fav amp / source was the most likely the Udac do to the very small size and bang for buck. As for the headphones I loved the HD580, HD600 and Denon D2000 all due to the bass not being over powering but being noticeable and the "liveliness" of the cans as well as the soundstage.

So here's my dilema, I'm going into the Navy so I don't want to spend mega bucks on Audio Gear. I want the best "Bang for my buck" setup. I have been out of the game for awhile and heard Sennheiser has a new lineup coming out really soon. So whats the popular gear going around now....

Also, no IEMS as they kill my ears!

I'd like an All In One Dac / Source such as a Udac or E7 or on the same lines. As for the Cans, something reasonably cheap...nothing thats like $200....Also, if used...then that would be better.

I find the Shure srh840 to have a similar sound as the hd600/580. While the Creative Aurvana Live is a good sounding can, I can't stand them right after listening to my hd600. So if you're still looking for a hd600 type sounding can, I'd highly recommend the Shures.

So your saying he shouldn't get what's considered to be one of the best Sub $100 headphones by comparing it to $150 OR $270 headphones? I'm not saying that they aren't better but he asked for bang for his buck and I gave it to him.

open: uDac + Grado SR225
closed: uDac + Denon D2000/5000

The first sounds better imo and costs less, but is open and might not work in all situations.  Both Denons and Grados do well with low/portable amplification.  If you need good isolation, SRH840 do a better job than the Denons (but has a much more limited soundstage) and is very inexpensive.

I agree that the CAL is one of the best bang for buck cans. I was recommending the shures because it seems that he has a preference for the hd600 sound. With that taken into account I would say the Shures would be the best bang for buck for his situation. Now, if he didn't mention the hd580/600 I would have recommended the CAL highly as well.

IMHO, buy a Clip+, Rockbox it and add in some Fischer Audio FA-003 headphones. Audio bliss for relatively little money...under $300!!!
