Best and Worst Remake of Song:

Someone probably already mentioned this, but Sheryl Crowe can't sing well enough to do Cole Porter.

Same goes for that Bono dude who botched a Porter song on the Duet album with Sinatra.

I just HAD to dig up this thread, guys, sorry. Went looking for it, in fact, just because this one remake I got was so horrible.

I'm sure we're all familiar with Bob Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door". Great song, and the live version in Before The Flood was also great. Now, we also all know Avril Lavigne. Now try to put a great song with an artist who can freak you out just by her look. Yup, that's right, "Avril Lavigne -- Knocking On Heaven's Door.mp3" just showed up in my Limewire Shared folder, and there it shall die.

Alan Parsons managed to mangle the excellent instrumental Mammagamma on his latest album A Valid Path. The new version is a rediculously overdone techno version of the timeless original. Oh, I should mention that I'm sure glad I got that album on Emusic because it's a letdown.

hey, he's got a perfect right to mangle his own song if he wants to

by the way, does alan parsons sing himself now? or how come he lost his "project"?

another bad cover: tears for fears trying to imitate bowie on ashes to ashes - actually that one is no cover version, it's a misguided clone attempt.

She can't write good songs on her own or with help (apparently she's had someone helping her write songs for both her albums), so I guess she's molesting any song she wants to.

I'd also like to add Anthrax's cover of Milk and Cher's cover of I Got You Babe (with Beavis & Butt-head, no less) as good, if not oddly funny, covers.

ok it's SRV week here in my house - his cover of Little Wing is just amazing. Jimi would be proud.

a few best:
System of a Down - "The Metro"
Ben Folds - "In Between Days"
David Gray - "Say Hello Wave Goodbye"
Lauryn Hill - "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You"

worst:
Foo Fighters - "Darling Nikki"

Some of the best:

Concrete Blonde - Everybody knows (Leonard Cohen cover)
Little Wing
Twist of Fate (Dylan cover)
Man's World (James Brown cover)

John Mellencamp - Jailhouse rock
Rod Stewart - First Cut is the deepest (Cat Stevens cover)
Nirvana - Man who sold the world (David Bowie cover)

Some of the worst:

John Lennon - Stand by me
Don Henley - Everybody knows (Leonard Cohen cover)
Judy Collins - Suzanne (Leonard Cohen cover)

There are some really bad ones that came out recently, but I'm not up on the bands who did them.

Worst would have to be anything by Kid Rock (he's done way too many covers to count...). I haven't heard Avril's covers, but her 'original' stuff is bad enough, so I'll take your word for it.

Best would be GnR's cover of Knockin' on Heaven's Door (sorry all, but I absolutely can't stand the original Dylan version), and Dream Theater's cover of Elton John's Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. Actually, those two should be reversed. Dream Theater did such an amazing job it's like they wrote the song first. It's that good. The CD (A Change of Seasons) didn't get as much press as the others, mainly because it was filler material between releases, but it's still well worth getting.

I don't know if it's the best or worst - John Zorn doing "TV Eye" from the Stooges. Is the vocalist Yamatsuka Eye on Crack or what?

You can find it on "Rubaiyat:Elektra's 40th Anniversary"

I absolutely hated that song

But my worst ever remake has got to be Pearl Jam's cover of "Last Kiss". That was really painful.

edit: I forgot to add - Tatu's remake of "How Soon Is Now".

I'm shocked nobody mentioned Rush's recent "Feedback" CD with all its excellent covers, like '"Summertime Blues." It kicks some serious ass.
