I still hate the Lenny Kravitz version just as much.

all mine should have the prefix IMO... anyway, good ones:

Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind (Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley) damn, damn good! Neil and Chris wasn't sure it was good enough even for a proper release, but the fans practically DEMANDED it to be released as a single, and flew to number 1 in the UK charts.

Suede - Brass in Pocket (Pretenders) Brett Anderson takes this classic and sings with even more yearning emotion than Chrissie Hynde did.

The Cure - Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) the Virgin Radio version, which had long been unavailable until this year's Join the Dots, is surprising faithful to the original. the version that appeared on the Stone Free compilation, features samples, dance beats, and a reworked guitar riff that may seem blasphemous but is surprisingly enjoyable.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Helter Skelter (The Beatles) the band takes a Rock classic and punks it up like no other punk band, starting everything slow and dirgelike, and builds it up to its climax and dramatically ends in a sudden full stop, like the song fell off a cliff...

Nine Inch Nails - Dead Souls (Joy Division) this version is clinical, sterile, and carefully calculated, while retaining Joy Division's depth.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Waiting for the Man (The Velvet Underground) jaunty, jittery, bass guitar driven, and quirky. totally reworked the VU classic.

Devo - I Can't Get No Satisfaction (The Rolling Stones) works in the same way as OMD's VU cover version. the Stones' classic is completely deconstructed, and spastically put together again.

Travis - Baby One More Time (Britney Spears) how can a pop staple get better? when it's acoustically strummed on a guitar and when a man sings it with a thick, heavy Scottish accent!

Red House Painters - Shock Me (Kiss) Mark Kozelek sings a Kiss staple? Shocking indeed...

Radiohead - Nobody Does it Better (Carly Simon) totally hilarious!

bad ones:

The Cure - Young Americans (David Bowie) nice try Bob

Frente - Bizarre Love Triangle (New Order) annoys me everytime i hear it.

Blur - Maggie May (Rod Stewart) Damon Albarn deadpan the vocals, taking all the life out of the song.

Jessica Simpson - Take My Breath Away (Berlin) ugh!

Sixpence None the Richer - There She Goes (The La's) bloody awful! and most people don't even know who The La's are... and when they do hear the original, people think they covered Sixpence!

Pet Shop Boys - Where the Streets Have No Name/Can't Take My Eyes Off You (U2/Frankie Valli) How oh how did Neil and Chris come up with this idea?

Limp Bizkit - Faith (Geroge Michael) why even bother?

Micheal Bolton - When a Man Loves a Woman (Percy Sledge) this man sounds like he completely burst a vein singing this.

Good:
Metallica - Am I Evil? (Diamond Head), Stone Cold Crazy (Queen)
Rage Against The Machine - How I Could Just Kill A Man (Cypress Hill)
Run-D.M.C. - Walk This Way (Aerosmith)
Sepultura - Orgasmatron (Motorhead)
Anthrax - Bring The Noise (Public Enemy), Got The Time (Joe Jackson)
Guns N' Roses - Hair of the Dog (Nazareth)
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails), Rusty Cage (Soundgarden)

Bad:
Anything by William Hung
Guns N' Roses - Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones)
Avril Lavigne - Chop Suey (System of a Down)
Soundgarden - One Minute of Silence (John Lennon) (literally one minute of silence)

That's funny. I'd say it's just the opposite!

Why is it that so many artists like to cover Pink Floyd songs? Is it because they can't come up with any original material of their own and therefore seek to capitalize on the publicity of someone better than them by making a cover of an absolutely marvellous song, thereby ****ing the song up?
I rarely listen to MTV, because they seem to play less and less music and when they do play music it's usually not to my liking. However I had the misfortune of witnessing a Wyclef Jean cover of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. It was the most horrible thing I've ever heard. If defacing a song wasn't enough, they had to deface one of the greatest songs ever written. What's next, a hip-hop version of Stairway to Heaven? A couple of days later I also saw the Scissor Sisters' cover to Comfortably Numb. Is everyone out of ideas already? Do they have to resort to vandalizing music which is otherwise great? While starting to ruin otherwise great music, why not start making covers to classical tracks? Oh no wait, someone already did this. Think it's too horrible to be true? Check out I Know I Can be What I Wanna Be by Nas. I wanted to find the guy responsible for this and do various horrible acts to him.

On the other hand, there are some pretty good covers. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt was in my opinion pretty successful. I can name some more good covers but I think I just ruined my mood with the above rant.

Everyone rightfully keeps mentioning this but what about the other tracks?!!! There are 8 CDs of 'American Recordings' if you include the 'Unearthed' box set. Songs I never thought I would ever enjoy, based on familiarity with the title and/or original recording artist of the song covered, I've really liked. Solitary Man (by Neil Diamond), Wichita Lineman (by Glen Campbell/Jimmy Webb), and I See a Darkness (by Bonnie Prince Billy) to name just three are every bit as outstanding as Hurt.

Shannon Noll, "What About Me"
For those of you who don't know who he is, he came 2nd in Australian Idol. He is marketted as the "good ol country boy" and he completely destroyed this Cold Chisel classic.... even Barnsey had a go at him

The glen cambell reminds me of the best cover I never quite heard. This was back in the mid-80's.

The db's were playing at American University in a small club. They announced they were tired of playing thier own songs and were going to play some covers. They immeadiately broke into "Witchita Lineman" and I just sat there transfixed. Ten seconds later, some jerks started yelling out at the band, and they stopped before the first chorus. That would be my favorite cover never quite covered.

Worst cover? That Fred Durst cover of "Behind Blue Eyes" is pretty dreadful. I really got annoyed after listening to that. I think he covered it because he had blue eyes. Totally idiotic.

Smash Mouth did a pretty awful cover of The Door's "Peace Frog". Simply painful to listen to.

edit: I just heard Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along The Watchtower", and do not like it. I think Bob Dylan's live version of it, which can be found in "Before The Flood" is much better in terms of energy, while preserving Bob Dylan's style (of course, I didn't expect that from Hendrix, I just expected something ummmm....better).
