Best $400-ish headphones?

What amp are you driving the HD650 with? It needs a fair amount of clean voltage output to not sound lazy. Also the default fit has a tight clamp - you need to relax that by extending the metal arms out of the headband and bending them at the center and closer to the gimbals. I did that to my HD600 and apart from the imaging it was basically a K701 with more prounounced midrange than treble, and slightly deeper (though not outright louder) bass.

Past that, look into the HiFiMan HE400S. Similar enough sound to the HD600/K702, but easier to drive at 22ohms and 98dB/1mW.

I have a pair of HD650s but i don't like the sound signature and comfort.

What sources (DAC/amp, computer smartphone, etc) are you plugging the HD650 into?

I'm running them on a Schiit magni 3.

HD650 upscale with better system. Magni 3 is a good start but it could be too laid back IMO for HD650. If you don't have any intention of an upgrade for amp and dac, getting a headphone like HE400i is a better option.

I'm currently running it into my PC but intend to get a Modi Multibit soon.

To feed the best analog audio signal from the PC to the Magni 3.
Set the PC's on-board audio to 2-channel and Speaker out (not Headphone out) and max out the volume setting (75%-100%), on the PC.

An Asus Xonar DX sound card (used, $65) or a USB (or optical) DAC (from Hifimediy) might improve audio quality, over the on-board audio

For something different, try out the HE400i w/ your current amp, or the Fostex THx00 Mahogany.

I've heard good things about the Massdrop x Fostex TH-X00. I do love my Beyer DT880. My main headphones are the DT1990, maybe you can find them used for $400.
