I don't know if I would go so far as to call their user interface "simple". I will say that Benchmark has packed a lot of features into a very small amount of real estate. Yet, I can't help but feel like their interface is due for a "make over" when just about every other DAC has implemented some kind of digital display. I really want to see Benchmark's well deserved reputation for engineering excellence reflected in ALL aspects of their DAC including design.
Imagine if Benchmark's engineers decided to make a user interface with fewer buttons and some kind of glass display or touch screen. Think about how many technical features they'd pack into it! I'd bet it would wind up looking like something one-step shy of an oscilloscope!
I concur that the current interface is a bit overloaded, i.e. using multiplication factors for display of DSD data rates (not that it would bother me since I ignore DSD anyway). I happen to like that its not anything like the display used in the new RME ADI-2 Pro, utilizing layers of submenus for an astounding amount of functionality that kept me fighting to just get what I want: music out without any EQ applied etc.
Yes, one has to know that e.g. long presses of certain buttons perform a function, and that is a problem for sure if I don't have the manual at hand. I'm in the happy position that I once configured internal jumpers and line out settings to what I wanted it to behave like and never touched it again, but that may certainly not be the case for everyone. But it lets me have a device without a display that simply performs its task, not drawing any attention (OK, the blue LEDs would be nicer if they were not that bright) -- and thats what I meant by 'simple' above.
BTW: did anyone check if the USB input can be used from the Apple CCK adapter directly? The DAC2 drew too much power, but maybe they changed the USB receiver...
