Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H6 Discussion Thread

Just wanted to report back after picking up a pair of H6. The sound is much more balanced – it doesn't have the overwhelming bass and harshness that bothered me with the H9 (1st Gen). It's a more open sound than the very forward sound of the H9, though not quite as open and airy as my closed-back Beyers. The sound is really quite impressive for such small and lightweight headphones.

Side note: the cable that ships with the Beyerdynamic Lagoon fits the H6. It's a bit tighter fit than the stock cable, but it does fit. Funnily enough, I find the H6 sounds better with the Lagoon's cable – it has a bit more body, sounds a touch livelier and opens up a bit more. I was surprised how much it changed the sound (I thought it would sound about the same).
Do you know if the Lagoon cable is available separately?

It's interesting that you mention the Lagoon's cable. It's a very cheap cable so you should replace it with something better. I did that, although I was a cable skeptic, and immediately heard a difference. I had never imagined that a cable swap could be so important, but then the Lagoon stock cable is particularly crappy.

Beyerdynamic does have it listed on its website: europe.beyerdynamic.com/connecting-cord-lagoon.html

Care to expand on what you dislike about the sound of the Lagoon's cable? I have other cables, but the cable that came with the Lagoon is the only one I have that fits into the H6's recessed jack.

The H6 is easier to drive with the Lagoon's cable than the stock B&O cable, which I think is at least part of the reason it changes the way it sounds. Maybe it's mimicking the effect of an amp to some extent? If you're already running the H6 from a headphone amp, it probably wouldn't make much of a difference though. I find the H6 sounds nicely detailed and balanced with the stock B&O cable but it lacks a bit of body for my tastes, at least with the sources I'm using. With the Lagoon's cable, it sounds fuller and more dynamic to me, and I'm still getting a good amount of detail (I can make out piano pedal movements on quieter tracks, among other things).

How does the sound of the H6 change with a well-paired amp? (from what I gather, it does benefit from being amped) Does it open up the soundstage a bit more, bring out a bit more detail? Any (preferably sub-$500) amps that you would recommend?

The H6 scales very well with amplifiers that can deliver the power. H6 is a somewhat un-sensitive headphone and to my ears they are a completely different thing when I use them with my Meier amplifiers than directly from my laptop or phone. Without an amplifier they tend to be boring and with no excitement. With an amplifier they have better speed and punch.

Hello everybody, I bought used H6 v2 for 110$ a week ago and using it with LG Hifi plus amp + equalizer apo on pc. Is there any thing to do ( under 20$) for better listening experience ? Also the original cable's condition is not good. What is the compatible ( with or without mic its not important ) nice cables for H6 ?

REDUCED H6 LOW FREQUENCY RESPONSE
Just in case anyone has any observations... my trusty H6 Mk1s which have been used very regularly for over 5 years seem to be displaying a loss of lower end frequencies through all sources/amps vs. what I recall. My 'control' was to go back to my Shure 940s which I remember (and have a reputation for) being bass-light... and what do you know, lower mid and bass frequencies are there in a way they just are not with the H6s... has anyone any experience of this... or am I going mad?

This is the only other discussion I can find on the subject

Deterioration of the earpads and resulting loss of seal maybe?

I
Excellent point! I will investigate & report back. Replacement ear pads are no longer officially available :frowning2:.
I acquired some ‘standard‘ non B&O earpads which many users have reviewed as being satisfactory or better for the H6. This means though destroying the existing pads to get access to the plastic mounting ring. Does anyone have any experience?

Just rediscovered my H6 1st gen with my newly acquired ifi micro idsd bl. What a brilliant combo

Hey, thanks! Before I'll say "enjoy!", let me ask you if there's anything in particular you like about this pairing :)

Oh, and... enjoy!

FWIW: hadn’t used the h6 for a while and and particularly not outdoors. The 1st gen is best with an amp and that’s where my new BL comes into play. It added they additional power and clarity to give an overall wow experience, in other words a more authoritative sound - whatever that may mean. (Have to admit though that indoors, I do prefer the Stellia’s :dt880smile:)

Thanks a lot. This part I understood perfectly well :)

Authoritative sound and general drive are essential in music. So if you have that with our stuff, awesome :)

Been looking into replacement earpads for my H6 v2s, and wondering if there are any options anymore? Went through this entire thread, but looks like all the previous options are no longer available.

Barring true replacements, has anyone had any luck removing the old pads from the plastic back and replacing them with something aftermarket? Thanks for any help!
