One just popped into my head while I was working on something... Chumbawumba's "Tubthumping" aka "I Get Knocked Down". Now, I don't mind the song that much (except the fact that it was in such heavy rotation for awhile that I thought my brains were going to leak out of my ears), but it's certainly not representative of that band. Before Tubthumper Chumbawumba was a Crass-labeled anarchist punk/post-punk band... totally anti-corporation and anti-mainstream, who dabbled in a variety of genres including some, I suppose you could say, electronica type stuff in the early 90s.
Tubthumping isn't a song that's completely alien to the Chumbawumba sound... I mean, its not indicative of their best maybe, but you know who it is when you hear it... however, lyrically, it doesn't even come close to the type of political edginess and dark humor that the band is known for. The song and its exposure to the mainstream was so completely and insanely out of step with everything they were known for it was just a shock to the system the first time I heard it. I thought the apocalypse was near when I heard tubthumping playing in the background of a commercial for my small local TV News station. Very very bizarre.
