I just noticed that I left out the "D" in AD2k from your initial post, so I was thinking A2kx Art Monitor instead of the AD2kx Air Dynamic.   Derp.

Not that I've noticed, but I find them more comfortable.

  For the pads, they seem like they're the same.  But possibly, each pad that leaves the assembly line is potentially slightly different, like in my case where the pads of AD2000x are uncomfortable due to the shape and size of the inner circle, while pads of AD1000x are comfortable with minor touching of the driver by my left ear.
 
If you look at the pictures I've attached, the external pad shape and size seems to be identical for AD1/2kx.
 
It's almost as if the AD2000x pads were rotated 90 degrees clockwise.
 
As I said in my original review, in the testing I did on a very limited number of sources AD2000x seemed to be slightly better than AD1000x.
 
Something I haven't mentioned yet, is that AD2000x is louder playing than AD900x by ~12% on my computer volume scale.  AD2000x is at most 3% louder than AD1000x, if at all, I haven't done detailed testing to be certain.

i have AD2000x, after long usage, the earpads is pretty comfy if you keep stretching daily.

I have concluded that the AD2000x pads I received are defective, no way this could have been intended.  I have replacement coming in today, will compare.  If the replacement is the same, then I think it's the manufacturing batch the two came from that had issues.
 
Then I'll decide if I'll keep them or order AD900x pads to swap out.

I have the AD2000 and swapped the stock pads for the AD900x'. Much comfier; softer, a little thicker. I still stuff the back of the pad with some tissue to angle it, but idk how much of an issue the ad2000x has with drivers touching your ear.

Got a new set of AD2000x, unfortunately, the pads are the same.  So it's either the batch that Amazon has or the entire line is made like that.  I'm disappointed.  They got the pads right on AD1000x and made them terrible on AD2000x.

Have you tried modding the pads? Using weather stripping/foam tape? I bought some recently for my windows and it was $3 a roll and completely reversable. 
 

 
Here is someone modding it with tubing. I don't like this because its to hard. But the same principle works with the weather stripping.

i dont know about you guys, but the further away your ears from the driver, the worse the sound it gets, though more soundstage! for me it's overly bright and lacking extension on both ends.

am i the only one who find your problem, NOT a problem?
why not rotate the earpads? why not stretch the inside? NOT all earpads are the same, kinda like beyer velour earpads, they dont have the same shape, but they fit on circular ear cups.

Well, the drivers do get a little closer over time as earpads gradually flatten with use.

I did the tubing mod on my AD900x and earlier on my AD700, except with spare coaxial cable. The distance change is minimal, but the fit is a lot better. I did the weather striping on my AD700 as well, which left less room for my ears and made the pads get hotter, but the added plushness allowed for a better seal on the head.

Yeah, the AD series earpads are pretty aggravating. They use some type of semi-on ear approach that's hit or miss depending on the size of your ears. What makes it even worse is that there aren't any other manufacturers that make earpads the same size as the AD series (and their closed counterparts), so you either have to do some minor modifications that slightly improve comfort, or go to town on them and mod other pads on there. I guess you could slap on some W1000x earpads. Those look pretty puffy. I think what I did way back when was to use some cotton balls and stuff them underneath the pads.
 
I've noticed that the farther away your ears are from the driver, the quieter they are, so you may have to compensate by turning up the volume a bit.

I'm pretty sure I've seen denon 2000 pads and stax pads on AD line before.
