Audio Technica updates their open headphones "AD" Series: AD2000x, AD1000x, AD900x, AD700x and AD500x

I thought the AD1000x was the more neutral/laid back one and AD2000x was a more engaging/forward/coloured... hah.

I think you're referring to the AD2000, people say that was one crazy headphone.  The X version is supposed to be one of the most neutral (if not the most) in that entire lineup.

Not sure - I've seen a AD1000x v AD2000x A/B comparison confirming the AD2000x was more refined, more engaging and had more forward mids than the AD1000x, but both shared quite a similar sound signature.

Interesting.  By any chance, have you used any other headphones from the same lineup?

Yeah, I upgraded from the AD900x to the AD1000x. When I had them side by side the AD1000x was the clear winner for me.

Still own the AD700, owned like AD900 for a few years and heard the AD2000 briefly, though it clamped far too tight for me.

Looks like I'll be going down a similar path.  So far I've only had the A900X but I love it.  AD1000X is the logical upgrade for me, although there's still a chance I'll skip over it and go straight to the AD2000X.  It depends, ideally I'd like to audition both of them first.

For all of you considering the AD2000X, be aware that you will need an amp that can output a lot of current to get them to come alive. I had the AD2000X for close to 9 months without realizing this, thinking that they were very efficient and easy to get loud so a dedicated amp wasn't necessary. Getting the proper amp makes a huge difference.

Yeah I was considering pairing it with the WooAudio WA7tp Fireflies Duo.  It's most likely overkill but I'd wager it's a good match for the AD1000X, AD2000X, and HiFiMan HE-560, which I plan to get as well.  At the end of the day I'll likely just keep the AD2000X and HE-560.

I bet the WA7 would be great for the AD2000X but if you're planning on getting the HE-560 as well, maybe an even more powerful amp would be better since the WA7's specs say that it outputs only a max 1W at 32 ohms. I actually sold my AD2000X to fund my HE-560, wish I could've kept it around though; I loved its mid-centric sound sig. I ran my AD2000X and currently my HE-560 out of a Project Ember and they both sound amazing out of it. I should be getting over 2W per channel from it to my HE-560 using the low output impedance setting.

Wow the Project Ember is surprisingly affordable.  Can't hurt to try it out then, thanks for the response.

Yeah no problem! You should also consider the Lyr 2, heard lots of good things about it so far. A bit more expensive and you would need to spend more on upgrading its tubes since it needs a matched pair, but still a lot more affordable than the WA7.

The WA7 is on my list too, should be getting at the end of this month. Bit of a binge lately, also have the HD800's and the Q701's coming! Very interested to see how they all compare. Different price brackets though.

I'm the one who made that comparison, and would like to make a revision to it - the AD2000X is actually the more neutral of the two. The mids isn't more forward than the AD1000X's, and the AD1000X has less bass and more upper mids than the AD2000X. The AD2000X is still a step up in terms of clarity and refinement though.

I've since switched my AD2000X to the older AD2000. The AD2000 gives me the most emotional and engaging mids I've ever heard in a headphone, something I just couldn't get with the AD2000X no matter what source I pair it with.

See things are kinda quiet around here so I can only guess that most have discovered Amps and DACs make headphone listening a joy. Most complaints go away when details are bought out with the proper equipment. From there it is a matter of preference in equipment and headphones.

Try this song, well recorded, nice harmonica solo in the background. YouTube Mp4 ripped out audio in ACC will be great if you want to take it with you.
