So I was curious and tried putting Denon D2000 pads on the AD1000X.
 
Some observations:
 
1. Every part of the frame of the AD100X, including the baffle and diffuser fins, are machine out of magnesium. This is nice especially compared to some other flagship designs - ie: SA5000.
2. Denon D2000 pads with the additional angle seem to make the soundstage a little more natural, and bass seems just a smidge stronger with the pleather material.
3. The removal of the thin layer of felt between the driver / waveguide and the ear also adds just a bit more sibilance to the highs, but more importantly it exposes the driver to things like my long hair. So I did not try the experiment too long.
 
I'm looking to order some AD2000X pads, probably from here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GENUINE-Audio-Technica-HP-AD2000X-Replacement-Ear-Pads-for-ATH-AD2000X-Pair-/130900186650?pt=US_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item1e7a42561a Just to see how an AD1000X with AD2000X pads sounds like (and if it sounds the same as an AD2000X).

I think it was mentioned somewhere in this thread if you like treble 1000x, if you like mids 2000x.

interesting comparison with the ad 2000x, i have to admit i've only auditioned them for 20 min or so, abit more on the 1000x but the deciding factor is that the 2000x is just about 2X the price of the 1000x and that's going way over budget for me

Also, I noticed hissing on one of my FLACs when using my A900X's on my cpu...time to get a DragonFly?

Long story short I love the AD1000X.

I didn't catch the last part correctly, the AD1000X is a bargain but the MA900 sounds better and is more comfortable?

I eagerly await the ad2kx but a_recording's findings have me curious as to just how much better the 2kx is over the 1kx.  If it's like hd600/hd650 then I may have to re-think the decision.  Shame I have no 1kx to compare.

Hmm, that's not what I really meant. The AD1000X and MA900 sound different but are on a similar technical level. The MA900 is more comfortable and cheaper. The AD1000X is better built. The MA900 is more laid back and relaxing (and a bit more neutral), the AD1000X is exciting and a little coloured. It depends on what you are after.

I'm back.
I haven't read whole lotta posts in this thread, but I'm narrowing my purchase of headphones to:
ATH A-900X (closed back) vs. ATH AD-A900X (open air) and perhaps AKG K550.
 
Well, I want my headphones for indoor quiet envinronment:
1. at (quiet) home
2. in a quiet library
3. in a quiet coffe shop.
 
I will not play my music very loud.
 
I'm concerned about the sound leakage from headphones to the outside world (in the library, etc)
 
Do the ATH AD-A900X leak a lot?? How about the A-900X?

I wouldn't recommend taking the AD900x outside because of non-portability and because of their open nature. They leak a decent amount and they definitely do not isolate well.
 
Might I suggest the WS99 instead of the A900x? Smaller, more portable, great spectrum + superb bass, decent isolation and leakage control, and about the same price as the AD900x.
 
Btw, it's the ATH-AD900x and the ATH-A900x. Or, more simply, you can just refer to them as the AD900x and the A900x.

+1. The ad900x are open backed and leak quite a bit of sound, and also they have a long cord so not very portable.
 
The ws99's are everything that pngwn said, plus they have a short cord. And did he say that they sound awesome? Yes, I see that he did
