Good work there, buddy. It's nice to look back at all of the great (and for some, not so good) woodies that Audio-Technica has released over the years.

Build
The W5000 sports a beautiful Indian ebony wood grain housing. Black and Brown stripes across the big giant cups.
20201125_204753.jpg

This is the first time that Audio Technica changes the housing wood to a different style. Especially an Ebony wood type. And also a dark black/brown color.

On the cups we have a white painted on letters. This time with Raffinato written stylistically

The W5000 has the interesting unique Wing-design to them. It also got rid of the plastics rubbery headband and replaced it with a steel band.

Cables:

This time around we are following the double cable entry. This is the 3rd AT to do this and will continue onwards to the future from now on. But sadly in 2005 we are still sticking with an attached cable :frowning2:

The W5000 stilled carry on the single 6.5mm end. But there isn't a Wood handle this time :frowning2: or anything written on the handle !! :frowning2:

Ear-pads

The W5000 has one of the best AT ear-pads ever came out for their line! A sheepskin leather pad :)

20201125_210841.jpg

Drivers:
The drivers sports a large similar 53 mm driver. This headphone also has that angle style drivers that shoots sound towards your ear to get that perfect sound.

Sound:

Sadly the color of the cups does not correlate to the sound. This headphone is a reference headphone with a bright, analytical-sounding headphone than the typical AT house signature of its warm, musical sound.
The W5000 is undoubtedly a very airy, open, spacious sound signature. A fresh, bright headphone that is not dull and mellow like some AT of the past.
This headphone sounds very detail, accurate, and has an exciting clarity to it. It is a very good reference headphone. It is not perfect but good and fun. It is not dull or neutral. It still has the AT signature but without the warmness.

20201125_210145.jpg

Conclusion:

I rank it 9/10

I consider the W5000 an exciting Headphone. I will not rank it in the top 5 best Woodie of all time but will consider it a very interesting woodie nonetheless.

*A unique update to the familiar sound of the past Woodie
*A fresh take and fascinating turn with its ebony cups.

“May the woodie be with you!”

I absolutly love every single woodie. Thy're not the most technical. all drop off in the bass but they do well for some music and look gorgeous. These are all trophy headphones IMO and I'd absolutely pay for price for every single one.

BTW, not all drop off in the bass, my L5000 goes deep flat into subbass, extension to 20Hz is perfect as in planars, both on stock pads and others.

20200705_075507.jpg

Build:

The AWAS is made out of a Japanese Cherry tree. A red wood housings from the rare Asada Zakura wood. This was not the first time AT has used this wood.
20200705_072128.jpg

This is the first time AT has double its logo on the wood cups. The ink paint is imprinted firmly with a touch of gold.

20200705_075156.jpg

The ink-paint seems soild and well done! Do not see it ever rubbing off! :)

20200705_075214.jpg

20200705_075153.jpg

The headband has been redesign and somewhat upgraded. AT removed the wing support design and reintroduce a traditional headband.
20200705_072655.jpg

20200705_072620.jpg

The Left and Right has also been design and adjustments and been redesign.

20200705_073134.jpg
20200705_073338.jpg
20200705_073325.jpg

Sound:
The sound is more of a safer mellow, modern take of a warm sound. This headphone has a very interesting balance of warmth to them.

This headphone is a very easy to listen headphone. it is not technical or analytical. The treble rolls off at the end, which gives you an extremely unedge sound. This is a musical instrument than anything else.

I consider this headphone a very gentle balance warm sounding headphone. Nothing actually stands out. Just a normal easy to listen to headphone.
20200705_073636.jpg

Conclusion:

The AWAS is not a unique woodie. But a more modern balance AT house signature. An AT sound with a modern take.

Rank 8.5

I just can not call this part of the Woodie line. But it seems like it is :)
Overall, a fun enjoyable headphone.

"May the woodie be with you!"

I just want to chime in on revision. The investigation into this is too vast and spans a good 25 years.

The non-limited versions have 1 or 2 revisions.

Audio Technica ATH-W10VTG
Audio Technica ATH-W100
Audio Technica ATH-W1000
Audio Technica ATH-W5000

W10VTG - has two known revision,
One extremely lush and warm, thick mids, and bass
2nd is forward sounding, lower and upper mids, bright and fatiguing (not the one you want to own).

I can confirm there's two known revisions of the W10VTG. Went through 3 pairs of the W10VTGs over last decade and two of them sounded musical and lush with warm mids. I was disappointed and surprised to find out the 3rd pair sounding relatively thin with a peak somewhere along the upper mids and lower highs. The W10VTG's is more like the little brother of the W11JPNs. They both sounded very similar but the W11JPNs are a little more refined sounding. I find the used price for the ATH-W1000 a bargain! They sounded so lush, involving and musical as well as beautifully built and they're only selling for $400ish on the used market.

Audio Technica's first batch of Headphones was created in the 1970s. They release their first series called AT-700. # 701, #702, #703, #704, #705,

The AT-704 is the 4th headphone created by Audio Technica! and it was the first pair to have denim pants (leather jeans) straps!

Before the legendary L3000 Audio Technica had leather on their minds!

Man those look great Eva 00, 01, and 02, Rei Shinji and Asuka. Oppo make the best use of this collaboration. it seriously feels like made by a fan of the series.
