Audio-Technica ATH-WP900

Not in my case, fortunately! After putting on the Yaxi pads and knocking about 7DB off the treble with my mojo2, these cans are definitely keepers.

The Cardas cable is microphonic I found out, unless I keep it away from my body, or certain clothes, which is a non-issue for me.

Otherwise, I think these are really enjoyable punchy, crisp and articulate headphones the way I have them configured.

And again, without those modifications, these would be non-starters for me. For example, I think the YAXI pads also helped to smooth out the last of the treble edge I heard.

Too much bass: perhaps, but too much treble: didn't notice :)

Strange, how very subjective sound experience may be

I'll need to take a closer listen next time as that did not jump out at me although the build could definitely be much better as the headband feels relatively flimsy within this price range! I noticed that right away for sure. Not concerned so much about it breaking with careful use, but I did purchase an electronics protection plan just in case.

I personally don’t find anything lacking with the base, unless I specifically compare it to the higher frequencies which are much tighter or more defined. Otherwise, I believe it works as a whole but could understand if this was my only pair of headphones, for example, I might not be as satisfied.

I’m also wondering if my cable/ear pad upgrade or source play a factor here too.

Hello. Did you finally buy the cable from Forza to WP900? If yes, are you glad with it?

No I haven’t bought it yet - plan to soon though and will report back.

So I just got these finally and I really enjoy the sound, but I find the light build almost too light as if they feel almost "flimsy". I know it's a 'me' thing, but I had hopes they would feel sturdier by their look.

So I have recently started my head-fi journey and stumbled on looking into these. I started with ATH-m40x running out of PC 3.5mm jacks for several years, just to listen without bothering my wife. Recently added a Modi / Loki / Vali stack and decided to try some more headphones. The process has gone:
  1. ATH-m40x
  2. Meze 99 Noir
  3. DT 770
  4. DCA Aeon RT Closed
  5. DT 700
So all have gone back except the Meze's. The Beyers, while very nice just didn't really do anything special for me. The DCA were amazing in detail and imaging, but lacked sub bass. The Meze have the sub bass, and while no where near as "clean" and "tight" as the DCA were, of the the genres I listen to (classic rock, alternative, EDM) they beat the rest out.

So, how did I get here? I currently have some fuzzy (Brainwave Hybrid) pads on the Meze and I absolutely hate them! The Sheepskin ones should be here tomorrow, so rather than mess with swapping to the stock pads for one night, I pulled the ATH-m40X out and was like "man, for cheaper headphones these still sound pretty good". That led me to think that maybe I am partial to Audio-Technica's sound and started looking at their offerings.

So, is this a good set to try for a classic rock, alternative, EDM listener that actually LIKES fiddling with the EQ to get everything to sound just how I like it? Based on pages 70-Here I am thinking yes, but just wanted to check for opinions.

For whatever it’s worth, I seem to be having success with the Eq on my Mojo2, reducing the treble/adding some mid base) and these headphones as they are too harsh otherwise with this pairing for me. It seems they’re responsive and take well to the changes. I did see another post regarding success with Mojo2 Eq and these cans…

I also took out my Topping G5 today, and with my Apple Music Eq selected “treble reducer”, which again made these headphones listenable and enjoyable for me when they were not without it using this amp/dac.

*Probably should not be surprised but I just plugged this into my Ifi idsd signature when I got home and I think it may be the best match yet for me. No issue with treble harshness and really nice sound stage/separation. Like listening to a full desktop rig at home.

I did not like the bass boost switched on though as I felt these cans could not accommodate it.

I agree, the ap2000ti which is their flagship portable feels so much sturdier, the wp900 would be a much better can if it had that headband, and for its cups and cost it really should.

By the way anyone looking for a balanced sounding better version of these cans thats what the ap2000ti does, still I keep both because I prefer the wp900 for bass music.

Just grabbed a used set of these to try them as my travel set. Looked to be in pretty good condition for $250 shipped, and for that money as long as they sound as good as the Meze 99's they will replace as the travel set, I'm cool with that since I'm not a fan of the Meze when on the go (I travel a lot for work).

Can someone tell me the dimensions of them laid flat? I am trying to find the lowest profile hard case available as I will attach it to the outside of my roller bag when not in use.

I have long since sold my WP900 so can't provide dimensions, but I still own the case I bought for it (a cheapie off Amazon). FWIW, it fit perfectly for me. Here is a link to it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HVHGWXB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
