Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 Discussion Thread

So I can scratch MDR1A off of my to-try list as MSR7 is that much better anyway, eh?

I wonder if M50x/M70x's drivers are related to MSR7's.

Slightly different impedance, though same size and look.

I recall Audio-Technica said they were brand new drivers. The frequency response and sensitivity are also quite different on both.  Probably the same design but new drivers.

They all have completely different housings, of course they will sound different even if they had the same drivers.  I only stated that M50x and M70x are related, but I was wrong, it is MSR7 and M70x that are probably using the same drivers.  They all look like they came off the same machines, though.

Thanks.  Regardless, can't wait to try both.

I only tried the M70x briefly but I thought the MSR7 and M70x were much more similar, the M70x having a more recessed midrange than the MSR7 but overall sounding more "flat".  They have the same impedance and frequency response but differ in sensitivity. MSR7 drives louder than M50x on my Sony Xperia Z5.

Hello i've been looking at the Msr7 for a while and I cam get the Momentum M2 over ear for around the same price, I honestly love the sound sig of the Momentum but wondering how the Msr7 sou d but I havent gotten a chance to listen to them yet. So im just wondering how is the bass on the Msr7 compared to the Momentum and which should I go for? Clamping and all that isnt really a problem for me as I don't have a big head or big ears haha, so mainly build and sound quality is what I care for most also comfort but I find most things comfy :). So if anyone can do a comparison between the Msr7 and Momentum M2 i'd greatly apreciate it. Thanks :)

I did have both and imo they're quite different. The m2 has an extremely laid back smooth sound and I don't think it does great for faster music. The treble on the m2 is my most favorite aspect about it but still it's too laid back for my ears. The msr7 is mid-centric with tigher bass and bright trebles so it plays a lot of genres great, but soundstage is perhaps smaller than the m2.

Anyway I'd say you should audition the msr7 too see if it's for you. I myself prefer the msr7 but YMMV.

Also, which genres do you listen to? If bass is most important, go for the vmoda m100. It reallys bring Edm and Hiphop to life more than both the msr7 and then m2
. I use to own the M100 but I personally didn't enjoy it I found the bass to be uncontrolled and ruined a lot of the songs I had. And yes I listen to alot of edm and rap but if it's edm I like the more hard dance genre so hardstyle, hardcore, hardtrance etc but I also like the prodigy and a bit of trance. But yeah I found out that Jaben has them in stock so I might for past there thjs week and give them a try :) any other headphones in the price range of $200 - $350 AUD you'd recommemd? And out of the M2 & Msr7 which had a harder bass impact and rummble? I ain't no basshead so M2 level is just perfect for me if the Msr7 is just a tad less or more I think it should be no problem :) just don't want overly bassy headphones. I was also considering the Philip fidelio l2 but they don't have removable earpads so don't know I feel like thats a big downer for me.

If you want closed-back cans then I think that's it. The M2 should have more bass rumble, but it seems to me that Sennheiser is very keen on tuning the Momentum lines towards slower, softer music. The MSR7 as a whole tends to be neutral and it's never too bassy, but on bassier songs I found it to have quite good textures and provide enough punch.

. I'll try comparing the two this week at Jaben and hopefully I get to see which I like best. Thanka for the help :)

Much as I hate to, I'm putting my MSR7 up for sale. I love these things to death, as anyone who follows the thread knows, but I'm always using my open stuff at home and IEMs on the road, so these poor things aren't getting used as much now. If anyone is interested, check the link in my sig.

I honestly love the detailed sound and separation of MSR7 when I tried it in store, but ended up getting M2 bc it's much more comfortable ( I could wear it M for 10+ hours )

Should I exchange my M2 for MSR7?
