Audio-Technica ATH-A900X: Impressions, Reviews, Mods, etc.

I have both the a900x and a500x.I bought the a900x the day after buying the a500x because I was so impressed by the a500x.
They are both quite nice but the a900x has more detail, is far superior generally , and is well worth the price difference IMO.
I personally find the a500x the most impressive headphone I`ve tried in it`s price point though.

Incidentally, when auditioning the a900x I tried the a1000x as well. The difference between those was not nearly as clear as the difference between the 500x and 900x.
Not at all worth the upgrade price (also IMO

).

If you're really interested in the a500x I intend to post mine in the for sale section tomorrow.

LOL, I'm just thinking that shipping would cost nearly half the cost of A500X or even more

When I bought M40x from flipkart.com for INR.7199 (USD.116) the A500X were available then for INR.6959 (USD.112) and a week later the same A500X's were available on Flipkart for INR.5000 (USD.80) --- I went crazy

You`re right.
I obviously will be losing money on this.

Fact is, they were an impulse buy while I was working in Japan.
I have no need for them and someone else might enjoy them cheap

Anyone notice that these headphones can emit louder volumes compared to many other types of headphones?
When I take off the headphones from my head, they are almost like speakers and start blasting music everywhere. Much louder than my open back headphones that's for sure.

I recently got the A900x from buydig. This is my first AT set and I have fallen in love with their "house sound" This is particularly true for the sound stage and the forward vocals.

I want to move up the Audio Technica Ladder. I was looking at the W5000 and the W1000X/Z, but many reviewers state that they are lacking in the bass. I find that the A900Xs are just fine in that regard, but I wouldn't want to go a more expensive set with much less bass.

If the A900x has the same signature as all other AT sets (like the two mentioned above) I would love to know. Thanks !

Just recently got them, love them and already want to upgrade? Haha!
Why not enjoy them for longer?

Anyways, the A900Xs sound very different from the W5000s, actually the A900Xs are pretty flat and neutral for a pair (non-studio) Audio Technica headphones. Most Audio Technicas home audio headphones are voiced/colored in special way, the W5000s in way not many people agree with. I didn't like them one bit, I like some warmth and body, something the W5000s lack.
I think the W1000Xs could be an upgrade, but (from memory) I feel the A900Xs are more cohesive.

I would have to agree on mink with this. Even though the A900X is on the midrange area of the Audio Technica line (compared to if you jumped to the A1000X and above headphones that start having massive price spikes like $400+ USD), I always go back to my very first headphones (the A900X) because they sound very unique. I've had them for 4 years now and no matter how many times I upgrade; there's no closed back headphone like the A900X.

Actually, my experience has been:

No.

After demoing MANY Audio Technica headphones while living next-door to Bic Camera in Japan,
price is not necessarily as reflective of sound QUALITY of their products either IMO.

Thanks for the input guys. I am still curious about the W5000Z that has just been released. I could do with a little less bass and be happy. Although the A900x is my favourite between the other I have  (SRH840, MDR7520, XPT100, K550) it is a little boomy on the bass compared to my MDR-7520 or HD600s. So id a W1000x or Z has a little less bass and clearer upper mids I would be happy.

Since the new W1000Zs are so new I would be taking a risk though. I think I may wait until more feedback is available.

I just got these today via a head-fi trade and really enjoy them so far! My only qualm is that they are basslight (especially coming from the DT770 and seeing as my next headphone will be the TH600). If these had more bass impact I would be in love, still just good enough for house though!

Actually, I think basslight is an exageration if compared to headphones generally regarded and "neutral-ish".
In comparison to my aka q701 they are quite bassy indeed.

To my ears of course

They have more bass compared to my K7XX's which are said to have more bass than the Q701 so that makes sense, but compared to the TH600's (from my memory of a 15 mintue test) they are shy. Also they are shy compared to the DT770's they replaced.

Thk for review.

These are a great pair of headphones, they sound great for music and gaming(positional audio) with a good sound card.
I am using these with the Creative "Titanium HD" on my PC and am very pleased with how it sounds.

Hey guys, just got the A900Xs and am loving them. Great sound and the fit is pretty good.

I'd like to replace the pads and I've been looking at W5000 pads on ebay. That real leather looks super tempting but has anyone here tried that combo? I wouldn't want to order them unless it was guaranteed they'd fit.
