I don't know why that link didn't work. Here it is again.

The AD900's are only 38 ohms. The mixamp should drive them just fine by itself.

Just wanted to throw another headphone y'alls way. Any word on how the Denon AH-D2000 compare to any headset mentioned in this thread? I know these are closed and have a low impedence(form what I've read on different spec sheets/tables/graphs online). The only reason I ask, is cause someone is selling one New for $246 shipped. That's about $100 less than amazon and most retailers I've seen. Figured I'd throw it into the mix :)

Thanks again for the replies and interest in this thread. I'm learning quite a bit :)

Mad Lust Envy has the Denon D7000 as a top choice for a gaming headphone, and from what I gather, the  Denon D2000 has the exact same driver, and the only differences are the housings and dampening.  So with that said, D2000 shouldn't be far off.

Yeah the ATH-AD700's are superior in comfort to anything I've ever tried before. Thinking this would apply for the A700 I bought one of those as well - And I was sorely mistaken.

As for the Mic mod, a friend of mine bought 2 thin magnetic plates (roughly 3inches in diameter) - He then put some adhesive tape (not really tape, the 3M sticky stuff) and applied it to both a stand-alone mic (which he detatched from a desktop mic) and the purple magnesium of the AD700. Worked like a charm.

The hardest part of it would have been detaching the Mic so that the cabling was left in tact

He then proceeded to wire the cabling through and around the foam earpieces (which are replaceable - so no fuss).

I guess the only REAL problem is that he sometimes knocks the mic off in an outburst of emotion when gaming (which is... close to like, 2 times a year.

Hey for the past few months I've been looking for the same thing - a quality pair of headphones with a mic to use on my Xbox 360, and PC. I'm glad that I found this site/thread cause I have almost the exact same situation as you Shazam!

I was originally looking at TurtleBeach stuff (cause its cheap and I'm poor atm), however I have a pair of Sennheiser HD595s. I love these headphones - I got them for school for audio class (sound editing) and use them for gaming as well (only single player though). I also bought a Behringer Xenyx 502 (5 channel mixer) so I could have both PC and xbox audio come out of my stereo.

Now like you Shazam I thought of finding a mic to attach to my headphones, but didn't want to ruin them or always have a mic attached. I was also looking for a way to control the mic volume and so looked up the Astro Mixamp - which eventually led me here. However I just realized that "hey! I already have a mixer!" so why would I need to spend another $130 on another mixer?

Assuming I get a mic (I really like the Hyundai one used in the mod Rebel posted) and attached it to my headphones (adhesive seems cool, but I'd prefer a clip), do you think I could rout it properly through my mixer? The Xbox controller needs 2 way signal to receive the mic input and output the chat correct? If so is that where the Astro Mixamp would come in handy, cause I don't think I can rout that with my mixer.

You need mixamp if you want surround sound, in case you want to use your mixing board, you can get the turtle beach dss for surround sound.

Shazam,

I think it doesn't get any better than mixamp+ad700+mic.

Ya I figured that, never really had surround sound though so don't know if I need it.

But my main concern is having adjustable chat volume through my headphones. I may just get the Zalman clip on mic, but then I essentially have a PC gaming headset (two 3.5mm jacks) and I know I can hook it up to the Astro Mixamp with the included Y-adapter (combining the two cables into 1). But what I'm wondering is if there is an alternative to the Astro Mixamp - either cheaper or that would just be done with an existing mixing board (my Xenyx).

No the Turtle Beach DSS does not provide any functionality for non-Turtle Beach headsets to separately control chat volume and game volume. It only adds the ability to virtualize surround sound. The purpose of the DSS is to provide the lower model headsets like the x11 with surround sound capability - headsets that already have built in functionality for accepting/sending voice chat sound.

In the case of the x11 it has a cord that branches off of the inline volume control, to go to the xbox controller (in addition to the cord that receives audio from your tv/xbox). THAT is the piece I want to buy/replicate.

The Astro Mixamp also has this function but my question was is anything else does.
