It's just binaries, there are no config files or kinda to look at. The binaries are indeed different, but I cannot say what exactly they changed or added.

No, I check their Amazon S3 bucket regularly. They created a new dir and replaced AudezePenroseFW.xml file (Audeze HQ app just fetches this link https://audeze-penrose.s3.amazonaws.com/AudezePenroseFW.xml).
This update was meant for a small number of Betas and we made it available for a short window, did not account for the Argus eyed few here.

We do not plan to release this version as it is only a partial set of what we planned but hope to release a version in the next couple of weeks. The main change in the above version is the Mic quality there were other changes that I cannot post here yet, so contact support for details.

Do the headphones feature protection against bricking? eg. some devices have dual bios, some let you force flash in some type of service mode.
Yes. The Audeze HQ apps determines during upgrade which one to upgrade, so we have a backup.

Does this update switch mic gain and game/chat balance?

It is so counterintuitive. Please consider.
We are testing different beta versions. But this mic gain / game+chat balance is getting a big change over because of 2.4Ghz wireless + BT mix.
We are trying to find the right "balance" :)

It's pretty random but I will. Regarding the "connected" message loop when going for a walk (while phoning), will the upcoming firmware allow to switch to a BT only mode ? How will that work (will the mode button cycle between wireless, BT, wireless + mix, aux?)

Yes. We are adding a new mode that you can move to with the button. Not sure if it will make it in the next release or we will do it in a future release.

Let me know what you hear. I have crackles and pops as well and was told it's connection interference. Considering the only other wireless devices in that room is my phone and Ps5 controller, I call BS. But that's what I was told.
