Very much agree with this. Blindly adjusting to Harman curve is a very bad idea (and frankly quite silly)!! There is a reason our Reveal presets does not do that either. Harman curve was developed based on listener preference using a specific rig, but it does not fully account for variability of headphone measurements on a specific rig, especially in the upper mids and treble. On LCD-X, I may boost a few dB centered at 4kHz and perhaps a bass shelf (depending on taste) but that is about it.

Edit: Fitting to Harman target on most of our LCD line of headphones, to my ears has resulted in a very bright signature, it may sound impressive on first listen or during A/B and some may prefer the forward sounding treble, but I do not consider it either natural or neutral.

Edit2: There are other headphones (HD800 comes to mind) where fitting to Harman target would work very well because the measurements on 45CA translate quite well to what we hear, but it has not been the case for most of our models.

I hear ya man, and in principle I agree with you. BUT, I just received some '21 LCD-X's and I was so looking forward to trying the built-in preset that you guys have in Roon. Opinion so far is that it's not blowing my skirt up. Alternatively, I dialed in a Harman curve, made some minor adjustments, and find this MUCH more pleasing. It's very early so there's no way I'd pass judgement on them yet, but it's hard to imagine anything changing enough to make me prefer the preset. It's possible that it's because I'm an old fart (55) that I prefer the Harman curve to your preset. I'm comparing them to Clear Mg's, which I really love but have a small issue with my ear rubbing after a few hrs. Sound-wise, though, the Mg's really tick my boxes. I'm hoping the LCD-X's bass settles into sounding a little more natural as they break-in. There's plenty of it, it's just not as sweet-sounding, at least not yet. That's the most glaring deficiency I'm hearing in comparison at this point. I've had some LCD-2's before and these are easily superior to them. I still don't love the weight (and I had an aftermarket strap on the LCD-2's) but this new model does carry that weight better and more comfortably.

I really wish the guys at Sonarworks would get their collective thumb out of their rear and develop new profiles for a lot of the newer HP's that are the market now. They don't have one for these new LCD-X's, the Clear Mg, ANY Denon, etc. Their software is pretty fantastic (IMO) but it's only good if they have the profile you need, although the profile they have for the OG Clear still sounds better than anything I've been able to dial up with PEQ on my Clear Mg's.

I've got a while to listen to these before my return window closes so I intend to give them an honest shot. There's a lot to like already and it took the Mg's about 12 hrs to settle in, these already sound better than they did at this early point, so that bodes well for them. Only other phone I also want to try is the Denon 9200. I'm waiting on Denon's site to get them back in stock. They give you a 60-day trial period.

Try my EQ. I think you will be impressed.

Pre-Amp = -5

20Hz = +1.5 Q 4.32
25Hz = +1.5 Q 4.32
30Hz = +1 Q 4.32
100Hz = +0.5 Q 4.32
125Hz = +0.5 Q 4.32
160Hz = +0.5 Q 4.32
400Hz = +0.5 Q 4.32
500Hz = +0.5 Q 4.32
700Hz = -1.5 Q 4.32
800Hz = -0.5 Q 4.32
1.9kHz = +1 Q 4.32
3kHz = +0.5 Q 4.32
3.5kHz = +2.5 Q 4.32
4kHz = +1.5 Q 4.32
4.45kHz = +0.5 Q 4.32
5.5kHz = -1 Q 4.32
8.2kHz = +1 Q 4.32
12kHz = -2.5 Q 4.32

My issue with the Harman curve is mostly in the treble, the mids on the 2021 preset brings LCD-X close to the Harman curve (i.e., just matching the ear gain). I feel the bass in the Harman curve is also a bit too much but that is very much a personal taste. So when you said you preferred the Harman curve, it helps to know what you liked better comparatively speaking. At the end what matters is you are getting the best out of LCD-X.

I saw this and thought about it, but what kind of filters are each of these bands?

Yes, I agree, and decreasing the bass (tho just a little) was one of the small tweaks I made to the curve. I've only wanted to change the curve in the treble range on one recording so far, Pink Floyd - The Wall, but I actually needed to increase it. That's quite likely because of my age. Sucks to get old, but I'm still enjoying music immensely and I couldn't afford any of this stuff back when I had better hearing.
