If anyone else runs across a place to source the connectors, please let me know. I want to make another cable, but with even softer wire and 24awg instead of 26. Probably run with 6 strand cable instead of 8.

As far as I know there is no DAC/amp in the cable, but they might have been talking about those special apple cables

There is in the cipher cable. You can only get it by buying the El-8 titanium or the Sine.
Also, as far as I know it only works with Apple products.

It makes them easier to drive with a phone, and therefore they will sound better and be able to play louder if only used by the phone. If you run them through a dedicated headphone amp+dac they are useless though.

Yeah well, it has a microphone too.

I just put in an order for the 2016 EL-8 open and was able to luckily find a brand new Cipher cable unopened to pair with it.
 
Officially though Audeze only sells the cipher cable with the EL-8 titanium.. but the cable works on all 3 of the EL-8s.

How are the connectors? Are they more snug than the original cables, or still loose?

In the 2016 version they put in stronger magnets for the connectors. They will fit more snug and also be harder to get loose.

That's great news! I was concerned that the new connectors wouldn't be as snug on the 2015 version as the 2016 version!

Ok, so... I stumbled across the "Basshead" thread for headphones here... and guess what, DAMN! The EL-8 go low and hit hard with this song...

Not really my kind of music, but... WOW!

@WayTooCrazy, interesting song, played it with a few of my other headphones and it was very interesting in how they each presented the bass, the headphone that surprised me the most was my SR-009, goes much lower than what I expected.  The other headphone that was a wow moment was the HE-400, they have some kick down there.
