I voted humming, though it was actually hissing that I heard. No way would I classify it as dead silent, or even silent. My supermini is much quieter than the RA1.

Perhaps the question is too general?
AC vs Battery powered RA-1 introduces who knows how many problems, plus the obvious source disjunctions....
My vote went to dead silent, compared to anything I have plugged into a wall socket ever!

Finally got my RA-1 after a looooooong time! I just wanted to say that it is indeed silent with my RS-1

I gave an RA-1 a long audition and thought it excellent in all respects. I wish someone could say how what is "basically a cmoy" with "cheap components" works so well.

I had the RA1 with my Grados.Dead silent and sounded very nice together.I sold it as it was rather big for portable use,at least for me
