ATTICUS and EIKON, the new dynamic driver headphones from ZMF

I'm also very curious to hear about amp pairings with the Atticus, especially solid-state and those with preamp tubes. How is the Linear Tube Audio amp with them?

In my experience, solid states usually make it sound a little bassier and high impedance OTLs generally cause a good bit of midrange bloom, which sends the midrange forward pretty significantly.

There is also just a nice sort of synergy between the warm sound of the Atticus and tubes which makes the music sound very thick and romantic... this applies to hybrids, SETs, OTLs.... any tube design.

In my experience the OTL bloom and the tube warmth will "stack" on the Atticus. In my opinion, that is when it sounds most musically magical, sultry and seductive. How preferable this sound is to you... well that's subjective, of course, so YMMV.

There is no way an amplifier swap will make the change im looking for.

What exactly was the issue with the sound, if you don't mind me asking?

Any Atticus or Eikon owners try a bass sweep test? I have always been curious of their potential in sub bass performance.

My usual test of sub-bass is the track: 'Something About You' by Basement Jaxx
About 32 seconds into the song there is a very low bass tone that persists throughout the rest of the song.

Only the Ori and Alpha Prime can reproduce the bass in this song with proper authority. In my experience, all other headphones have failed at this song.

I encourage others to give it a listen.
Cool song, just tried it on my Fostex TH-X00 (mahogany) and it ate it up for breakfast :) Smooth and powerful. Then again I find the alpha pads on mine extend the sub bass very nicely. If you want a song that tests the deep and mid-bass notes of your drive alongside some highs, try Max Richter's "Song" from "Songs from Before". On lesser cans it will sound like a bloated, boomy mess, but on good bass cans its just deep and powerful and resonant.

From a discussion with Zach, a brief summary of the pads:

· Ori pads (leather) – standard on Atticus, voiced to match the headphone

· Eikon pads (leather) – slightly flatter, brings the ear closer, so a bit more in-your-face than Ori pads, slightly reduced soundstage

· Perforated pads – increase air-flow, slightly decreased bass, enhanced soundstage

· Suede pads – same size as Ori pads just with a touch less mid-bass and slightly more treble

The above is mostly my words summarizing what I have read in this thread and others. I know Zach is working on a dedicated earpad page with more detailed info.

There seems to be huge population of people who are major fans of the classic Sennheiser HD600 and 650 which are in the school of sound that I would say includes the Atticus.
(Of course there are many who do not like the Senns or that approach to sound, and that's been true forever.)
But I hope many in that huge pool of 600/650 fans would have their eyes (ears?) opened by the Atticus, which sounds to me like a super-version of the Sennheisers, with a lot more musical insight and a much more organic natural sound. (And I feel the Atticus has a certain something extra, like more reach and palpability without a hint of dryness.)

Just as a humble/respectful request, I think it would be helpful for anyone who finds the Atticus is not their cup of tea to mention any thoughts or impressions they may have of the Senn HD650/600.
They may just be in search of a much more vivid sound, and that would put things in perspective.

And of course the person deserves total respect for voicing their impressions.
Just my 2 cents.

@zach915m Can we mix/match wood and headband colors?

The usual seems to be Padauk/silver, Camphor/black or Cherry/black.

I think the Cherry Eikon with silver headband would look sweet, especially after the cherry wood darkens over time.

Yeah absolutely! I think we have done two cherry sets so far with charcoal parts per request. You can just email me or leave a note at checkout if you end up wanting to go that route.

I'm an HD650 lover looking for something even better and Atticus arrives this week. :)

ENVY ATTACK!!! Can't wait to read your comments about the Atticus.

The only HD650 I heard was a modded pair, and it impressed me a lot. This design (basic frame, layout, pads, comfort, "voicing") gets a lot of things right IMO.

Not to derail the thread - but Teak arrived for the Auteur and I'm finishing up a set that will be at Capitol Audio Fest on Nov 3/4/5 in DC. Linear Tube Audio and AmpsandSound will have both the Eikon and Auteur to listen to that weekend. I wish we could make it but some awesome amp manufacturers will be representing us. I love my ZOTL and Kenzie to death!!!!
