Yes, for their price the M50's are well worth it. I suggest you check out soundprofessionals.com. They always have M50 sales going on. I got mine last Thanksgiving week for $100. A while ago they had a deal that if you purchased the M50's at regular price ($160) they threw in a pair of audio-technica WS-55 "Solid Bass" headphones. They also do detachable cable and Bluetooth modifications for the M50.

When I started browsing the forums in late 2011, all I heard was "The M50 is awesome!" Now it's "The M50 is overrated!" The M50 itself didn't change, it just got more popular, as well as more competition.

Yes it did. It went up by $30-50 and got a flatter frequency response with the white box redesign. I don't have a problem with people recommending it as a good headphone in the $120 and under catagory because it is, but I do raise my eyebrow when I hear people saying it beats (audiophile) headphones 2 to 3 times more.

It beats fashion headphones two to three times it's price(P5, Beats, etc) but not audiophile headphones like the A900X, Mad Dogs or D2000.

Hmm isn't that supposed to be a good thing?

Depends. I still hear people recommending it as basshead phone with the white box revision, which I don't think it is. I think it's an improvement, but I also still think it's over priced when not on sale(or in the USA).

Especially when they sell it at MSRP + shipping tax in other countries.

A pair of self modded T50RPs. ($70-90 for the headphones, $20 for SRH840 pads, $20 for masses of modding materials).

Otherwise, from what I've heard, the CALs, Shure 440 are favourites of mine.

If you feel thus inclined you could look at the sub $200 range which is where very nice mid-fi headphones like the A900X, HD598, M80 and UE6000 reside.
