i just got the m50's, the coiled cable version is $40 more where i live so i just got the straight cable since i plan on only using them at  home. any tips on how to tie, shorten and generally just deal with the cable?

The straight cord is actually a lot better to deal with IMO.
Lightly fold it onto itself (think circles) and use a twist tie -- you could also wrap it around itself to keep it together,  but that seems to just fatten the package and put more strain on it.  If that isn't sophisticated looking enough there are plenty of products designed to keep headphone cords tidy.
