Hey everyone.

I have noticed that my m50s smell like crap! :0

I have no idea why, but it didn't smell like that before.  The ear cups smell, the headband smells, and even the cable smells for crying out loud!  The only part with no smell is the gold plated connector....

Oh and also, the CARRYING CASE smells too!!  Inside and outside.  It all smells the same.

I can best describe the smell as something like cooked cauliflower with turmeric...

Why is this happening?

I was thinking of using some febreze on it, but would it work?  Also, would I need to cover up all the openings (such as between the earpads)?  Then, do I just lay it down and spray some febreze on the headphones, outside of the case, and inside?  Do I leave it to dry before use, or can I just use it?

But mainly, WHY is this happening??!!

I'm so confused.  Please, NO JOKES ABOUT HYGIENE, because I am a hygenic person....heck, I wash my hands like every hour, with Green Apple scented soap from Bath and Body Works :p

But really, why is this happening, and how can I get rid of this foul odour?

P.S - They are about a month old...bought them brand new...didn't smell like this before about a week ago....

Thanks!

Maybe you should stop rubbing your leftover Indian food on them.  Seriously though, it sounds like a nice odor I rather like the smell of turmeric maybe you should hang them from the rear view mirror in your car.

Trust me, it is not a nice odour.

I just wanna get the smell out!  D:

Will Febreze work though?  And is it safe?

Yeah, febreze away. And maybe keep the headphones out of your damp dungeon.

Okay I'll try.  But should I cover the part where your ears go (between the earpads) or not?  And just like 2 sprays on the headphones, 2 in the case, 2 on the outside of the case?

Nah, no need to cover that up, it won't get in the drivers. Give 'em as many sprays as it takes, bud, there's no science to it.

Why not hang them outside? Let the cotton, leather, whatever it is, breath!

Okay, stop joking around :p

But seriously, is Febreze a good idea or not?  Also, will I have to wait a little bit of time before using them?  Also, are you 100% SURE that nothing will get into the drivers?

Sorry, but I get really stressed and tensed about pretty much everything :$

So yeah.

Febreze should be fine, although I'm certainly not going to test it for you. I wouldn't spray it at point-blank range though, maybe from a decent distance. But, hey, I'm not exactly a headphone odor specialist...whatever that is.

Buy Arm and Hammer Cat Litter deodorizer, put this in a box next to a window, and pour all over. I won't try this on open cans though but it should be fine for the M50. As for the carrying case, it's a leather pouch, right? Just wash the insides with a mild detergent (anything that's safe for use on basketball and football shoes, but really, really diluted), then hang to dry inside out.

And to stop this from happening again, don't stuff them into the carrying case right after using. Your sweat no matter how minute can accumulate and turn it into a microbe petrie dish.

Try some Vanilla scent oil from WallMart. Wipe the leatherette cushions with the Vanilla scent oil. Drop only a couple drops of the Vaniila scent oil at the bottom corner ofthe pouch. Put the M50s back in the pouch Let it set overnight. Hopefully, the next day you will have a Vanilla smell M50s instead the M 50s that smells like crap. Good luck.

Unfortunately, most ATH-M50's are made in China, where they hate the capitalist swine. The workers are notorious for defecating on their manufactured goods as they salute a giant banner of Mao Zedong; they will usually wipe off the stuff well enough so that any remaining feces is undetectable to the eye. However, heat and poor circulation will often bring out the smell, depending on how much crap is left.

You might send out your M50 to a lab to test the fecal concentration. If it's really bad, you might be able to get a partial refund from Audio Technica. I was able to get 15% back.
