I have it from a reliable source that it will be dropped in favour of the WS70 - while I havent heard the latter, its hard to imagine a portable closed phone at this price point with so much going for it. Particularly for those HFiers who are forever bleating about the lack of affordable phones with plenty of bass punch. Happy to hear from anyone who has tried both phones.

Vale ES7 - gone but not forgotten.

Well, to me. The WS70 does everything better than the ES7. One of the best portable phone I have heard in that price range.

They do sound good as well. If you are familiar to SRH840, I would say the WS70 is a SRH840 with tighter bass but a smaller soundstage. I do prefer the WS70 for portable use though, its much lighter and less... massive looking.

ES7 sounds quite a bit narrower than the WS70 in that respect. I don't think I can really find an area which ES7 does better than the WS70. Hmm, there is less bass on the ES7? That's about it. WS70 is not bassy enough to be totally unbalanced, its musical and pleasant to listen to. ES7 seems somewhat boring (and M50 in some extend) compared to WS70. Just don't expect it is a prefect phone, detail is there at the price point. But there are always better things, often for more money though.

The ES7 grew on me - initially, I absolutely hated the way they crushed my ears. If the WS70 is as good (or better), then AT have done a great job. How many superceded headphones were simply replaced by a more expensive variant that didnt sound as good as the old model (K501 and HD580 spring to mind - I'm sure there are others).

My WS70 came pretty clampy, but good old stretching fixed it. The earcups are larger, my ears fits inside it. The stock clamping force is still lower than ES7. WS70 is surely a improvement, in sound department for sure. The sound signature is slightly different, but still very AT like. I was scared away from the "Overwheming Bass" label, until the headphone shop owner open up one for me to try out randomly. (I was playing with JH16, Fitear 535 at the time) and the WS70 does not sound as I was expecting. It turned out to be something great at the price.

I loved the ES7 sound and looks, hated the torturous comfort.

Yumekui Merry!

I wonder about the comfort of the WS70 vs ES7.

Well, it is still featured on the Japanese Audio Technica home page along with the other ES-series headphones (ES3, ES33, ES55, ESW9 and ES10). As long as it is there, I would not worry. But it is pretty old. Released in October 2005. From what I have read about the WS-70, they are not very similar in sound. The "solid bass" series is different from the ES-series.

Seeing that the ES55 replaced the ES5 and that there is a ES3 (released in 2006) as well as a newly released ES33 (released in 2010), it would not surprise me to see a ES77 in the near future...

October 2005 ? Beyerdynamic have models that go back decades, almost unchanged.  Not sure about Sennheiser, but doesnt the HD25 date back to the middle ages ? As for Grado, I seem to recall seeing a picture of Moses wearing a pair of SR60s :)
