I've been lurking in these forums for a while now and have come to a junction of sorts. A friend of mine got a pair of DT880/250's after lurking here. He uses them with an Astro MixAmp and I have to say they sounded quite a bit better than my Turtle Beach HPX setup. They were comfortable, extremely light, and the sound was better than anything I've heard yet.

The choice I have to make, however, is whether or not I get the same thing he has or something else. From what I've read people generally recommend the DT880's, the K702's, or the ATH-AD700/900's. The DT880's are great. I already know this. The K702's have the "head bumps." It doesn't look comfortable at all.

My question then is this: Has anyone had any experience gaming with a higher end ATH-ADXXXX model? Such as the ATH-AD1000? Perhaps with the AstroMixamp? (Doubtful, but you never know.)

Am I right in assuming that if the ATH-AD700 and 900's are recommended so much that the 1000's would be that much better?

I have an Astro MixAmp as well. The DT880/250's were driven perfectly fine by the MixAmp and the ATH-ADXXXX models have a much lower ohm rating.

I will be ordering headphones and an Xonar Essence STX sound card for my computer on the 27th.  (PS, I'll be using them with the mixamp on the Xbox, and the STX only on the computer. I figure the STX will be powerful enough to not need the mixamp.)

Thanks.

TL;DR: ATH-AD1000 for gaming? On an AstroMixamp?

From what I have read they are just different to the AD900's not better.
The 700's get the recommendations for gaming because they are cheaper and have the same soundstage.
The improvements offered by the ad900's aren't really noticeable in games - only music.

Hm. Thanks for the reply. I have some things to consider then. Dare I try the ATH-AD2000's with the AstroMixamp? They have a much lower impedance than the DT880's I tried, so I think they should be driven well enough.

This is why you need to be critical of everything you read on head-fi, ciphercomplete hasn't even heard the AD2000/1000 or 900.

Indeed. It's also going to be basically impossible to come across someone who has heard the exact setup that I'm thinking of. Perhaps I will be the first to hear a AD1000/2000 + MixAmp and I can give my impressions of it. The 27th can't come soon enough.

The AD1000 is probably one of the more controversial headphones, and many threads I've visited don't have many positive things to say about it (I was interested once).  It's kind of like the Grado SR125/325 of Audio-Technica--not worth the cost when you can get better-sounding headphones in the model range for less (AD700/900) (SR80/225); and/or if you have that much money to spend, you might as well save up for the AD2000 (RS1/2).  These are the opinions of others--not mine, as I haven't had the chance to hear the AD1000 in person.

Alright. Thanks for the reply. I suppose I have to make a choice between the 900's or the 2000's. I'm definitely leaning towards the 2000's at this point. I'll create a thread and let everyone know what I think of whichever I choose when that time comes. Thanks again, and I can't wait.

Never used the AD2ks with the astro gaming amp, but they were rather good headphones for gaming back when I had them!  I think you wont be disappointed
