my point is that headphones like the A40 (which I also have and have retired) the microphone is "in-line"
there is no way to use a y-connector

thats strange bc I tested out my A40 headset with the same set up last night and used the inverted Y connector that came with the A40 headset and got it working just fine.

sorry. maybe I am dumb... But I don't get how you plugged the a-40 into a y cable.
The a40 only has ONE cable.

I thought this was the typicl set up. Y cable goes into the ASTO mixamp head phone out. ONE y out put goes to your 2nd headphone amp which then goes to your headphone. The OTHER Y cable out goes to your mic.

Idk, maybe you just got your wires crossed somewhere, or you need to get a Famale Y connector that can be plugged into your headset. Im sure its a simple mistake.
Here is the way I did it for the A40s:
-- I had to purchase a Y connector that comes with 1x Male end (insert to Mixamp)***Here is the Part: ASTRO 65mm PC Splitter

-- Astro supplied me with a Y connector that comes with 1x Female end (Attach to A40 Headset...Headphone green color goes to Mayflower Amp in OUT port)***Here is the Part: ASTRO Headset Y adapter

-- Astro supplied me with a 1.5 meter 3.5mm male end to 3.5mm male end connector***Here is the Part: ASTRO 1.5mm daisy chain cable

1. Plug in the Male Y connector you purchased to the ASTRO MIXAMP
2. Plug in the Female Y connector ASTRO gave you to your A40 headset
3. Take the green (headset) cable from your headset and plug it into your Mayflower AMP to the "OUT" port
4. Take the pink (mic) cable from your headset and plug it into the pink (mic) cable that you purchased...the one that is coming out of the MIXAMP.
5. Take the 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable ASTRO gave you and plug it into the "INPUT" on the Mayflower AMP
6. Take the other 3.5mm end and plug it into the green (headset) line coming from the Y connector from the MIXAMP.
Done.

Im using the A40 as I write this and both the headset and mic are working fine.

I tried to put in links so you can find the equipment I described from ASTRO but I guess you cant post links. Anyway, go to the ASTRO web site, and find:
1. ASTRO 1.5mm daisy chain cable
2. ASTRO 65mm PC Splitter
3. ASTRO Headset Y adapter
