Astell & Kern SR15: A&norma Impressions & Reviews

I have some more questions on the SR15 that I'm hoping those who have experience of the SR15 may be able to help with:

1. What is the quality of the WiFi receiver in the SR15? In my use case it'll be placed about 20 feet away from my WiFi router with two walls in the way, which has both 2GHz and 5GHz capability. Will the SR15 have any issues locking on to a decent signal at this range for audio (Tidal) streaming?

2. Does the WiFi transmitter in the SR15 cause issues with other audio equipment that is in close proximity or in contact with it?

3. Can the SR15 be used as a DAC? For example, if I have music stored on my iPhone, can I play that music out through my iPhone via USB (OTG) and then into the SR15 as digital audio, which the SR15 can then use it's own built-in DACs to provide an audio out?

4. Is it possible to remote control the SR15 via an iOS app on my iPhone or iPad, to switch tracks (pause, play, rewind, back one track, forward one track, etc)?

I think Dignis case better fits for almost all A&K DAPs. They are real leather and look nice.

Good to hear that it supports mqa.

I went to test xcan xdsd and sr15 yesterday.

I tested it with my oriolus v2 with thor v2.

I am using lgv30 right now as my source and i do have access to tidal mqa.

I really dislike the sound coming out from my lgv30 when i am using my oriolus.

I have a hifiman he400i at home and it sounds great only when i switch on high impedance on my lg.

Back to my oriolus, xcan sounded too mushy on bluetooth. Xdsd sounds great but the sr15 sounded different.

I tested it on the 3.5mm. It sounded very energetic and punchy on medium volumes.

On high volume, the xdsd sounded alot better even when it is on bluetooth tidal while the sr15 is on local flac.

The sr15 width does not scale at high volumes. The sound became very tall and narrow? (if that makes sense to anyone...)

I just ordered the sr15 today and i am going to test the balance output once i get hold on a balance cable.

I also do not like the sound of mojo. I used to have one and everything sounded nice but something is missing.

I have also tested the xbass and x3d on xdsd and xcan. None of them really do anything unlike settings in roon. The xcan is less subtle than xdsd but still, in my opinion, niether of them actually do anything.

Anyone else had problems loading albums onto the sd card on the SR15?
I’m using a mac with android file transfer,
When I drag the music over into the music folder it starts to load then it will stop and say unable to load a certain track ( this could be at any point ) then I can’t re try or load anything else until I reboot the Norma.
It took me almost 1 hour to load 3 discs last night ☹️
Loading to the hard drive no problem.
I’m using a SanDisk ultra 128gb class 10 100mbs ☹️

SR15 on balanced cable sounds energetic and not bad with instrumental separate and excellent vocals.
I agreed mojo is missing something when listening for awhile. My mojo is catching dust now. :worried:

Are your song file types compatable with the sr15?
Is the sd card formated correctly?
Also, could be maybe the cable gets loose during transfer, i used to get that on my fiio x5 gen 3. Swapping cables fixed it.

From reading on the net it sounds like my card needs to be formatted to fat32, can I do this in the player?
My file tip is ALAC, same as I have loaded onto the hard drive of the SR15.

Thanks

Is anyone experiencing freaking high lag and unresponsive interface with Tidal side loaded Apk? the DAP was perfect and really fast when I got it, now that I got all my musics finally downloaded, the interface is freaking me more than my old Fiio X7ii. My SD card is still half way full.

What version of the Tidal app are you using? There were two recent versions that had severe lag, even on flagship Android phones. It had been discussed in some detail on non-AK threads on Head-Fi and in the Head-Fi Facebook group.

Also, if you are switching from Tidal to music on the internal player, be sure that the Tidal app is closed out and not running in the background. If you swipe down from the top, if Tidal is running, you will see it in the notification bar. If you swipe it left or right, it will close the app.

One tip I have discovered to avoid skipping problems when playing from sdcard:

Upon booting, wait for all activity to stop in the Android status bar at the top of the screen. You will see “Scanning media...” and then the sdcard icon will appear, and then “Scanning media...” again briefly, and then the satus bar should settle down. If I start trying to use the device before this is all finished, I get random skipping during playback. I assume some operation on the sdcard gets stuck if not properly completed before other operations attempt to access it.
