Astell & Kern SE100: A&futura Impressions - Reviews

i've recently started using the balanced out from the se100 and found pretty noticeable improvements over the 3.5mm out. i did not expect such a difference. anybody else with similar experiences?
You should hear the SE100 in combination with AKT8ie MKII balanced - really wonderful. Several hifi enthusiasts compared the SE100 to SP1000 and got the result that the implemented ESS Sabre 9038 Pro is the better sounding DAC without the typical house sound and coloration of AK.
I also own AK320 and AK380Cu - but i prefer also SE100.

ooo i'll be sure to try that when i get the chance.

i'm using the se100 with andromeda s now. really impressed when i was using it out of the 3.5mm but now it sounds even much better from the balanced out. i've also been experimenting the andromeda s with my o2/sdac (even though the hiss is unbearable when theres no music) and surprisingly on a couple of songs i feel the soundstage and depth is a bit clearer than the se100.

Hi im pairing the se100’s with andromedas as well. Should give the balanced out a try too. Any sibilance on the highs? How’s the bass output out of the balanced output?

AK has one of the best balanced output implementation on a DAP today. Yeah, depending on your headphones/IEMs it can be water to wine. Separation and Imaging can change a lot.

My experience with a number of daps have been that balanced generally sounds better than unbalanced, but at a cost of battery life.

The first thing you’ll notice is how clean the sound is compared to 3.5mm. As for sibilance not that I know of but I think it’s tip dependent. I feel there’s more bass although I can’t say whether it makes the music more enjoyable or not.

I think a slight downside to the se100 is that it can sound a bit too clinical? I feel the music is more engaging with my andromeda s out of my o2/sdac or even se100+creative e5 amp.

Do people here feel the same?

Oh ok that is good to know. What balanced cable are you using your andros with by the way?

Folks, quick question as I am no position to audition this player and relying on your inputs to make some decisions. How does this compare with the KANN? Any inputs from someone who has tried both would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
I enjoy listening to SE100 more than Sony NW-WM1Z. So maybe better than KANN perhaps

IMO the SE100 + Andromeda is a really nice pair, doesn't hide or over expose any frequency. The Fiio X7ii and my Topping DX7s are way more neutral and what you would call clinical, I think. I prefer to listen to my Andromeda's on the SE100 much more than on those other sources. Same was with my BGVP DM6, on the SE100 was much less sibilant than the others.

I would not call the se100 clinical at all. It's close but skew towards a more lively signature. The DPX1A, now that was clinical.

I totally agree on this. They pair up really well. I use them with spiral dot tips and they sound really clean without any sibilance. I just ordered a thor II balanced cable from effect audio too. Cant wait to try this combo out!
