Astell&Kern new flagship A&Ultima SP2000

As nice as a SP2000 is by portable standards. It’s just not even 70% what a Hugo TT2 can do.
What cable is that with your khan? Is that a factory ferrite?

Having a few Chord dacs and SP1000.... it’s all in the pairing. The SP1000 can sound every bit as good as the TT2 with the right iem. i.e. the Legend X with the SP1000 has notably better synergy than with the TT2. I love to be able to take audiophile playback with me. As good as the H2 can sound it does not fit in the pocket and still requires a phone for control. It is portable and roon/dlna/squeeze/hqplayer enabled with a pi4 and battery bank (no 2GO for me). Now if you lean to headphones than the pairing shifts back to H2/TT2.

Though to be fair, these Chord DACs spank every existing DAP.

I have a dream. A lot less ambitious than MLK Jr's... I just want Rob Watts to design a Chord DAP. And to put Android and a SIM card in it :)
Yes, I agree. Only the mojo is challenged/beaten by the SP2000. From Hugo 2 and up all daps sound ordinary in comparison. Chords sound better especially with HQPlayer upsample or M-Scaler feeding 382Kbs or better into to a Chord. It’s a different reality. Haven’t tried the Hugo 2Go, but that might be very interesting.

I think we agree for the most part. But we are talking about using earphones or headphones that don’t limit the sound reproduction. I have only a few to compare with but each was a flagship at one time. In that case, Hugo 2 and Hugo TT2 always sound better. And yes these guys stay at home. The SP2000 also stays at home, not that secure walking around with something I am likely to drop. I take an AK300 with me outside.

I was merely supporting the idea that people maybe changing to home systems.

It’s just the Noble 8 core copper cable. It sounds much better from midrange on down to the bass. The overall tonal quality sounds less bright, but keeps the same details. Good improvement over stock cable .

This DAP with these CIEMs and cable are a match made in heaven.

If only an SP2000 could hook into an M-Scaler or if Rob Watts would make a portable M-Scaler :) Not bashing the SP2000, I do like mine very much, but it has no thunder like the TT2 with an M-Scaler

Have you triend HEDDphones? I found that the SP2000 has better synergy with HEDDphones than the TT2+Mscaler. Mscaler+TT2 lacks the low end drive with HEDDphones while SP2000 provides better low end performance, but nothing like a high end current mode discrete amp can provide for those headphones

I have not tried them. I guess I missed my chance. I was at a store today and saw them on display.

I have a pair of Vérité Closed Backs coming in a few weeks. Nice pair of camphor burl wood. Zach makes nice headphones. Looking forward to that.

SP2000 is usually not the first player that I think of for full size headphones. Love the 64 Audio U18t and U12t on SP2000 and it has more bottom than my Khan Cube.

I also feel the Hugo TT2 with M-scaler is the most transparent and dynamic system I have heard. I feel I am at the Jazz club. DAPs don’t do that for me. Battery vs A/C. Difference in power.

... but it's less than 70% of the price of a TT2, so that makes it a fair deal. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

@theveterans what do you think about synergy SP2K with Andro? Not to bright? I use SA700 with Andro and its perfect, but little hiss is annoyng and i am looking for upgrade (SE200, SP2K, M8).

SP2K on unbalanced is definitely neutral with bass heft that Andromeda needed. No hiss whatsoever while playing music and resolution is top notch. Never tried the balanced out with the Andromeda as the SE out is already incredibly good. SP2000 on the SE out is never harsh sounding nor laid-back and definitely has plenty depth that separates it from other DAPs and the rest of the AK DAP lineup. To be frank, I would actually not keep it if it had basic flaws in its sound like harshness, digital edge, weak microdynamics and low level depth presentation especially at its asking price point.

@theveterans can You check hiss level with Andro on "my way"? Play Tidal/Qubuz online and set volume on 0 and 1? Is there any hiss? I have small hiss on my SA700 when volume is 0 / 1.

Don't really understand the volume. At 62/150, Andromeda has no hissing issues and the player is very quiet that you will hear hissing from source files like from Fleetwood Mac - Rumours for example
