Astell & Kern KANN - DAP with Massive Storage & Battery
Jul 9, 2018 at 10:15 AM Post #1,711 of 2,698
No I haven't. But I already have the A & K Kann, so I am not looking for another DAP. At least not now. I was just looking for a great pair of IEMs to pair with the Kann, which is why I inquired about the Andromeda.

I do wonder though : is there some kind of consensus in this forum about IEMs which pair best with the Kann? If there are such IEMs, it would be great to know. For now, I'm going to inquire about price considerations. I just want some idea as to what is considered best IEMs, if there is such .a consensus.

Thanks.

Patrick
Im not trying too much IEM for KANN. Maybe you can try t8ie mark2.

i doubt there is a consensus, variety is the spice of life and everyone has their own opinion about sound quality, but:

i gave up on my ie800 for ibasso it01 with a balanced cable since i got my kaan and don't see myself hunting for another iem for a while, especially, since to me, these things sound better than a 'staple' that costs 5-8x more.

May I recommend AK Rosies,, updated 8 balance armatures ,, they also come with balanced cable
Awesome pairings with Kann

Thanks for the suggestion...

However, on another note: How about the Noble Kaiser K10, such as the one currently selling on Massdrop? Any impressions regarding its compatibility with the Kann?

i think i saw on the SE100 post that it's possible to hook up an external drive full of music through the USB-C port to that unit and have the AK recognize it -- does anyone know if something similar is possible with KANN? It would be amazing if i could hook up my 2TB travel HD to the KANN and have my music "on the go".

OTG mode is currently not supported on KANN.

thank you for quick response -- is that what it's called -- OTG? i thought OTG was where you can connect your DAP through USB cord into another DAC/AMP combo, so it would act only as a transport? can OTG also imply that you can hook up external storage and have the kann/whatever tread it as just another SD/micro card?

anyways, i have two follow up quesitons

1) can you list what models of DAPs from AK that have the usb storrage expansion option?

2) since you're saying "mode is currently not supported" it makes me think that this is a SW/OS limitation and not something HW specific?

OTG mode is currently not supported on KANN.

OTG storage support is available on any of our players with the "new" UI - SP1000 and SE100. I believe the SR15 also supports it via the microUSB, but I am not positive. When I get back to my desk, I will try it out.

Functionality also greatly varies depending on what type of storage device you connect since it draws power from the player. External SSD drives, USB 3.0 drives and USB flash drives work best. I have seen some mechanical external hard drives work, but they tend to draw a lot of power and deplete the player battery quickly.

OTG storage support is also currently not "officially" supported, so if there are issues, we will do our best to help troubleshoot, but cannot guarantee it will work for your particular device.

thank you for the clarification Jason.

so is that USB functionality somehow tied to new UI, is the new UI a newer version of an android fork that AK is using?

Any roadmaps to upgrade existing units, KANN in specific, either to the new UI or to give it this functionality without new UI upgrade?

if anyone expects a dap alone would drive lcd2 with authority they are mistaken biggly hugely :)

i own the lcd2 and kann and own and owned alot of totl daps non what so ever can drive lcd2 with authority as a dap alone

kann is good only for iems period but not for planars like lcd2. hifiman 560 and oppo pm1 and that applies to all other daps including the ak380 and amp, cowon plenue s, cowon plenue pm2 and others which i sold.

I have stated this long time before in this thread especially if you compare how those planars sound with a dap connected to an amp like alo mk3 B.

Its not about if a dap can push the sound to be loud, its about driving those planars with authority and keeping the integrity of the dynamics of those planars. And that can not be achieved with a dap alone peroid

I wander if you did finally find a portable DAP to drive your planars with authority? I habe Oppo PM1 and 3 and am looking for suitable DAP. So far the only portable option I have which satisfies me is Oppo HA-2SE.

I disagree with this statement. I find the Kann can drive a high-impedance headphone like the HD650 authoritatively when used with a balanced cable in high gain. (In single-ended, sometimes the HD650 needs more than the Kann can deliver.) Beyond that, the Kann works great with any number of over-ear headphones with impedances and sensitivities similar to those of IEMS. I listen to the TH900 on it all the time with a single-ended connection in normal gain. In that configuration, the Kann has power to spare. (If the source is unusually quiet, I might switch to high gain, but that's unusual.) I've not used any orthos, so I cannot comment on how the Kann works with those, but I think it's inaccurate to say the unit only works well with IEMs.

got my ak kann, all i can say its amazing and holds so strong against many totl daps I own or owned

it drives my oppo pm1 with authority in balanced mode, amazing sound, great bass, one of the most amazing mids which i really missed for a long time after selling my ak380, as its the best I heard also ak kann has great sound stage, and great highs. This is a no brainier at all , simply AK nailed it with this release . AMAZING AMAZING. So do not hesitate to seriously look into this dap and this is my impression and I had my share of totl daps and this offers an all in one package. And in real life it feels dam amazing in the hand and is not big at all

update : just tried my iems that are in my profile, just wow, with shure 846 no hiss at all and it sounds the best i ever heard shure 846, and ie800 just wow, and this is from single ended. Wish I had balanced iem cables. which is my next purchase for this amazing dap.

Nice solid full layered sound that leaves nothing to be desired at all from lows, mids to highs and with a great big sound stage. I am so glad that this is the signature of Kann which is full layered instead of thin flat. I am really liking this signature alot alot

Great dac, and to have this powerful amp under the hood I really am impressed , good bye to stacking and its now an all in one device to serve all the needs

and here you mention that Kann drives Oppo PM1 through balanced just fine. I'm confused.

@iridium7777 Sorry, somehow I missed this. USB storage function is a part of the version of Android used with the new UI.

As for if the new UI or if the function will come to KANN, I have asked our development team in the past about both questions and have been told multiple times it is possible, but have never received a definitive answer.
