Astell&Kern KANN CUBE

It's not night and day, but full-sized cans should benefit from the additional power out of the balanced output. That's my main reason for going balanced. Rather have the power and not need it than need it and not have it.

Thanks nicodem, the advice was from someone who really should have known that, but I’m glad I don’t need to keep looking. There are a few 2.5 balanced cables I’ve seen. Maybe the Moon one specifically for the elegias would be a good choice, about $375 US I think.

For full-sized also check out Plussound, Triton Audio Cables, Norne Audio and Forza AudioWorks as options. I like them all better than Moon Audio personally (didn't like the ergonomics and microphonics of one I had back in the day with a pair of Audeze LCD-X).

If you are looking for magic in the balanced output you will be disappointed. That said, I always use it when possible. The balanced output of most players will generally be more dynamic. This is not a night and day difference. The largest benefit is the ability to drive with more authority. The Cube, DX120, an QA361all really excel in 2.5mm balanced. The subtle SQ differences are evident with quality equipment.

Thanks everyone, I’m not sure what to expect with balanced cables really, so I will try the fiio cable as a quick, cheap trial with the andromeda’s first.
Thanks also for the other cable manufacturers, I’ll look into those after the cheap test if it seems worthwhile.
Some people on here suggest the balanced cable makes a huge difference but it seems the match between cable manufacturer/materials and devices is pretty important too.

Its been suggested that using the 5 pin xlr would be better than using the 2.5 balanced jack

I trust your post wasn't in reference to me!

I was speaking to connecting the Cube to another audio processor. I used the example of a preamplifier as another audio processor.

As others have mentioned, connecting a pair of headphones directly to an output set to line level volume runs the risk of permanently damaging or destroying your headphones.

No, sorry audio-, I should have mentioned your post from a few weeks ago, I know it was about using Cube to input to my home amp, The XLR headphone cable was mentioned by an audio salesman, who I like a lot and I’m not worried about it, saves me the trouble of trying to find something that doesn’t exist lol.

PS. It might have been suggested because there is a 4pin XLR cable to suit Sennheiser headhones I think. I’m guessing 4pin XLR must not be line out on whatever device they match up with.

I found magic in my balanced HD800 going into my Cube.It showed up as soon as I switched from my balanced KANN to the balanced Cube.
I must be one of the lucky ones because the overall sound quality was so superior in the Cube that I was a very happy camper and the phrase"now that's more like it" comes to mind.

A big difference!

I’ve been posting about some bluetooth problems in the Shure BT2 thread (https://www.head-fi.org/posts/15193055/) and would like to know if any Cube owners are using this bluetooth device with their Cube. I’m not sure which device is causing the problem, but the connection is really bad and virtually useless with the Cube. Connection with my iPhone 8+ seems to be rock solid, but its not aptX HD. I’m already on the second Shure unit as I returned the first suspecting it was faulty but still have the same problems. Some have suggested trying to connect to the Cube without using aptX HD to see if it helps and I think it would at least confirm the problem is the HD connection but it could be the strength of the Cube bluetooth signal too I guess.
I’ve tried resetting the Shure device many times and it seems to help but a lot and not for long anyway. I’ve done the Cube upgrade 1.14CM a couple of hours ago and was hoping that might help, but it made no difference unfortunately.

Go into settings -> update and press on System. This should prompt you that there is an update.
