Astell&Kern A&ultima SP3000

Has anyone heard of the sr35 and sp3000? what is the difference between them?
Totally different. Just on sonics, one is a very good mid priced player which is a tiny bit heavy handed with bass, but has good dynamics and an enjoyable listen, and the other is a TOTL player with microdetails, resolution/clarity, control & overall presentation to justify the title.

I didn't quite understand why you were using a data-only cable. In what way will the SP3000 not wouldn't be charged, yet the battery drain is slower compared to the stock cable when on the PC?
Partially correct :)

With my data-only cable, no charging happens while connected to the Mac in DAC mode and battery drain is slower than using the SP3000 on It’s own, of course. But it will drain and using a standard usb-c cable is more comfortable because it will charge the DAP while using it.

I only charge it when not in use and max to around 90% when not using it after charging or 100% when using after charging. I do this manually and baby the battery with this strategy a little bit. Not sure if this is necessary, though. Most modern devices can handle charge to 100 and use like that without problem and hopefully the underlying Android helps here.

My SP3000 never gets hot and this is a good sign for the battery, I think.

Anyone happen to know if battery health is protected when in DAC mode? To ask in more depth:

When using the SP3000 in DAC mode connected to a power source that simultaneously charges the SP3000 (such as when connected to a computer), does the unit have an intelligent battery mode to prevent the battery from being over-charged, or charged beyond a certain percentage to help protect battery life?

Thank you!
No issues leaving the SP3000 connected. It will turn off charging once the player reaches 100%.

I cannot answer your question and I think only A&K can. But it will charge to 100% and stay that way but I don't know if this will harm the battery or not.
Thanks for your reply. I also just heard back from A&K. There is good news about the battery function in DAC mode. Here's their response:

"Kindly note that the power consumed by usage of the device in DAC mode will be more than the supply from the PC USB port. Therefore, it may not be overcharged."

So, I do think it's probably safe to use a standard USB-C to USB-C audio/power cable. I do notice that my SP3000 stays at 100% charge when connected with an audio/power cable but they're saying that it's not receiving an over-charge.

Out of curiosity, could anyone else compare the SP3000 SS and CU and report personal impressions? For which version have you then decided after this comparison and why?

Actually I'm totally satisfied with my SS and I sometimes feel it warm enough, I just want to understand how far the difference is clearly audible etc..
Search in the thread there are already at least two impressions

I am pretty sure the cu is warmer whereas the ss is more clinical
On a side note I want to add that every firmware update sounds different. I can’t believe I’m the only person on Headfi who experienced that . I could describe every firmware that has been released so far if you ask me

Would that be the same as the KANN MAX ?

Thank you in advance.

Yep, in the meantime I have been researching for a VERY long time. Keywords: "SS vs CU". Quite a few matching results actually came up and I was able to form a good opinion. The difference is said to be minimal, even very subtle, but it is said to be notable. Generally, the SS is considered the allarounder and the CU is considered the vocal specialist. Since I generally listen to electronic in all derivatives, I think the SS is ideal for me; further, I like more the idea to have something more neutral-warmish and thus universal. So this post sums it up pretty well:

"If you only listen to acoustic music / vocal heavy music or all you want to vocal. Then you can go all-in and get CU.
If you listening to a large variety of music, you want detail from all the background instruments then SS is the safer pick." https://www.head-fi.org/threads/new-tol-a-k-dap-the-ak-ultima-sp1000.850061/post-13891657

Even better, I found a really great (!!) report by Alex (@twister6) not only on this, but also about the question how there is a sound difference between firmware versions analysed there: https://twister6.com/2018/04/09/ak-sp1000-ss-vs-cu/ As for me, I do not exclude that the sound can be (slightly) changed with the firmware update. Why not?

I posted this in the watercooler thread, but as I will be reviewing the SP3000 against my other daps, it is more relevant to post it here:

Today I received the loaner sample for SP3000ss, thank you AK for your trust. I feel so privileged for such trust. I will be putting the SP3000 against N8ii, RS8, LP6G and P6p, and at the end, I'll keep the winner and leave this hobby for a long while.
I'm not anyone important, nor I think what i've to offer can be a substitute to ones own ear. But somehow, for the last 18 years in this hobby, I managed to come across passionate brands and individuals who see the crazy in me and somehow get it. Thank you AK once more for your trust.

So yes, I dont have any bias towards SP3000 (or any other daps), as I said else where, I hate them all equally for costing so much, but I'm so thankful for this feeling as deep inside I know how much musical joy those daps have brought to me over the years.
AK120 was the first over 1K dap I bought, I still have and use it. I just didn't want to leave this hobby without listening to AK offering.

Let the games begin!

some of my songs are loudness calibrated (i can activate replay gain) and some not.

i’d like to reset this somehow and have everything not calibrated or checked. how can i do this ?

i tried rescanning the files but doesn’t work, that information is still attached to same songs as before. is there a way ? or should i go do a settings reset ?

Yo've to clean your tags (with mp3tag for example). Delete all tags related to replayGain and then scan your music with SP3000 again...this should help
