I purchased some DT 990s about 2 months ago, and something doesn't seem right about them.

When listening to them through any device, i can hear a slight popping coming from the left can. Also, when increasing the volume, lower frequency's start to distort really badly. I have a Matrix M Audio Amp i am using to power it (which Head-fi.org users report they use this headset with this amp fine), but these symptoms happen with or without the amp. Volume levels are not even that high at this point, well within easily playable levels.

I compared them with my HD 280 PRO headset, and these phones have no problems playing on any of these devices at much higher volumes.

Obviously being a $399 set of phones, i'm quite upset. Is it possible the phones are faulty

Very possible that they're faulty. If you've really only had them 2 months then contact Beyer. Your DT990 is under warranty.

Yes I had the pleasure of going through that with a DT880-250ohm ~ the driver is dying or practically dead.

They pop, distort, the channel volume imbalance becomes quite obvious and then all is still and quiet...

Hope you get them back quickly, it's a shame that it happens.

Stick with it. Beyer is a good company and will come through. You are going directly through Beyer right?

I had my 990 600ohms in service for almost a month but in the end they came through.  One of the transducer was bad and got to be changed.  Make sure you contact Peter at SS, i think they recently moved t a new place in NY.

Might be a cable issue, but that usually causes hiss or buzz
