I received my R70x Refine in the mail today. I'm a fan thus far, but need more time to post impressions.

How does it compare to the Tungsten? 😜

Got the Refine in today.

Impressions:

Bass is more present than I expected. Sounds reasonably clean.

Vocals/mids can sound quite clean and HD600 ish on some tracks, but a bit hollowed out or dry on other tracks. Not sure what might be causing that. Need to listen more. It generally sounds good, particularly with male vocals I'd say.

Treble seems fine enough overall, but there's something in the upper treble I'm guessing that can sound rather off with cymbal hits and such.

Comfort:

Super light, a bit clampy but not HD600 level. Should hopefully be very comfortable for long sessions.

Pads are very soft, and a far cry from the stiffer 600 velour.

They feel very soft in the hand, also, but on the head i think even more padding would be beneficial for comfort.

I'll get the Ori pads next week to try out.

Amping:

Without comparing directly, no huge perceptual difference on a OTL amp (Little Dot MKII) versus solid state (Atom Amp 2), but it is pleasant sounding to be sure and I haven't had any noise come through, which is expected given the impedance.

Overall, a very positive first showing!

Is this the correct left and right channel wiring diagram for the Audio-Technica ATH-R70x?
Hi there,

Thanks for the interesting question. For a balanced connection, if you put a 4.4 balanced pentaconn connector on the stock cable you will get a true balanced signal without combining the grounds. In the stock configuration, each ear cup gets its own individual wire with both the right and left signals carried on it along with ground. The 2.5mm jack in the earcup “determines” whether it uses the left or right signal. Since each individual wire has a ground, right, and left wire, you just connect the ground and appropriate signal wire to the correct pins on the 4.4 balanced pentaconn connector for each individual wire. The only thing that changes is now the 2.5mm male connectors will no longer be universal, they will be channel specific.

Here's an image that's directly from Audio Technica.

Can we expect these to come to the UK?
Not for this run. We'll be talking to Audio-Technica to see what we might be able to offer in the future. We'll update the community once we have a better idea. Thanks.

Any thoughts on the timing of the second shipment of these to customers? I'm eagerly waiting on mine, and I know the first batch shipped about a month early... :relaxed: :beerchug:

We will definitely be hitting the second batch estimated timeline mentioned on the product page. Though, there is a chance that we might ship all second batch orders by the end of November :).

Really enjoying my r70x Refine in the (just) two months I've had them.

They're not the end all be all, and lack a bit of detail to my ears, but they're very nicely tuned, very light and comfortable, with a very nice soundstage. Given their weight and comfort, they've been my "listen while working or moving around the house" headphones connected to the Hiby R4 DAP. Extremely nice headphone for the price, and still very enjoyable despite having better gear.

Their appearance doesn't hurt either :)

If you want to get more detail from the R70x, connect the Effect Audio Eros S cable to them.

Ah yes, cables, the primary means of increasing audio quality.

compared to the supplied cable, there is a big difference in sound.
