You can use a Live CD - so no need to install
Just make sure it got a good player and support for FLAC or what ever you are using.

mplayer is certainly the most compatible with a wide range of codecs out the box but if you prefer the foobar was of doing things then check out xmms2. You can control the player from a shell (or shell script to integrate with a program / event) on the computer's console or from another computer on the internet! If you really want to you can create your own front-end using Java, C++, Python etc...it's extensible and portable with add-ons (such as FLAC) you see.
