One at a time the old farts slowly fade away slipping into eternity, I thank you and those that have already gone for enhancing my hobby over the decades from Headwize to the present.
.
Happy holidays and a merry Christmas to all of you old (and new) farts!
.
Enjoy your sweet headphones and embrace your loved ones. Tis the season to be listening to headphones!
Love reading this thread............I'm not an "old fart" like many here but I've got 12+ years into this insane hobby and love reading the old folks view on things...........you guys built this site and I for one appreciate the historical perspective. YOU are all responsible for my addiction to this to the point of having owned/borrowed/reviewed/traded/bought/sold over 60 headphones and I thank you for that! I learned what I like/what I don't like and stopped reading the "hype" and just stuck with what sounded good TO ME.
Started in this hobby back in the 90's with a HD-580 Precision, and soon after a Sony MDR-SA5000 (when the street price hit $325), driven off a Headroom Supreme portable amp + various Creative/Auzentech high-end soundcards. And a bunch of hardware reviews on 3DSoundSurge.

The SA5000 is very heavily underrated and is sublime with upgrade cable. I still own two pairs and they still compete very well with any headphones under $1000 today. I think I joined Headwize in 1998 and Headfi 2001. 24 years and counting on this very site.
I still remember all is us competing to buy when the Heardoom Cosmics was available for sale in Sale/Trade Forum and the ETY ER-4S to a degree.

At one point I think I was known for my dislike of Etys and I stick by that. It wasn't the lack of bass, but what that lack helped to highlight as a deficiency.
You know what I miss as a memory? The SR-003's. They were such great (and impractical) low-ambient-noise earphones. But I miss that sound when everything came together... a particular location, a particular piece of music, a particular situation where carrying an additional approaching a pound-ish of crap around your person wasn't an issue.
I also really miss, again, the memory of the BOIL42 (aka a META42 in the body of a compact plastic kettle). It was hilarious to bring out on long train trips and see the bewildered looks from people sitting opposite me
I'm still very active in headphone and 2 channel speaker system gear. I started out in headphones (I'm not counting the first pair of Pioneer headphones that I received as a Christmas gift in my teens) in the early 90's with a pair of AKG K340 headphones. I also bought the Headroom Supreme portable amp around '97 or '98, and the HD580. About a week or two after buying the HD580, Sennheiser came out with the HD600. I called whoever I bought the 580 from and they allowed me to exchange the 580 to the 600. Like I said I'm very active to this day in headphone gear and I haven't reduced my spending on gear even though I retired in 2022.
I have 5 pairs of high end headphones and 5 amps. I actually listen to my speakers more than my headphones. I integrate my 5 headphone amps into my two 2 channel systems so I don't have to buy separate sources for speakers and headphones.
I miss reading the Skylab reviews, he used to be so active in the Headfi forums. I just looked him up and he hasn't posted in 3 years (I hope he's ok). Another thing I remember was the Singlepower debacle. I never bought any of Mikhail's gear and I'm glad of that. I hope I didn't bring up a bad memory and that you didn't get burned by him in more ways than one (pun intended). Anyway, it nice to see some of the old names still around. Take care.

I remember envying anyone with an HR Supreme or Cosmic for that matter. As a college student back in late 90s, the thought of spending more than $500 on a portable amps seems unreachable to me. I still remember the Cosmic being tout as “HR Max with wings”.
Speaking of DIY amplifier, my Larocco PPA V1 finally died. That amp and the accompanied STEPS PSU was my pride and joy along with the CD3000 for a good 3 to 4 years. I used the PPA with my portable CD player in the beginning and later with Sony ES CD players. What a wonderful time that was.

I would contact Tom at Beezar Audio for help. I am not sure if he will take it on but he knows the ins and outs of PPA or most DIY amplifiers including that of Pete Millets and much more complexed designs from ECP audio. He is the creator of those Torpedo amps.
