I have an iPod with a large collection of apple lossless format songs. But since it has no digital out, I cannot use an external usb dac with it. I wonder if there's any other player that can play apple lossless format songs but with digital out?

Or if you have better ideas to make use of an USB dac, please let me know.

I would try the portable sources w/ digital output thread. It's a sticky, can't miss it.

Also, the transcode from alac to flac shouldn't make you want to gouge your eyes out, it's usually quick and easy.

Totally missed the USB part, I guess focusing on digital out...
At least I am not the only one typing in their half-sleep.

optical out is okay too. My dac has usb and optical in.
optical out or digital out can come from the docking station, doesn't have to be on the player itself. But no wadia. too much equipments already.

Since optical out is fine then the iRivers are valid choices.

Rockbox has nothing to do with working optical out, it works with the standard firmware too!

Yeah, but does the original iRiver firmware play Apple Lossless? I doubt.
That is a requirement by the OP as well...
