Well I know the XMOS chip needs drivers, The TI chip should work just fine, especially if they don't mention drivers.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me on this thread can suggest a workaround.
 
As you said, a gs3 (or gn2) + -db would make for a great portable rig and IMO a good 'almost(?)-on-par' alternative to the dx100 (when paired with Alo's mk3 amp).

I currently have the Samsung Galaxy Note II LTE (GT-N7105) and the Sony MDR-1RNC.  I am currently quite interested on either the Sony PHA-1 or the Venturecraft Go-Dap X but cannot find enough comparisons between the two.  One feature of the Go-DAP X is the ability to charge the phone but haven't found that the PHA-1 does the same.  Has anyone here been able to review both to provide the comparisons?  Thanks!

So I've been reading through some of this thread as I just got a Galaxy S3 recently and wanted to try out some of the dac/amps that seem to work. It's quite a bit of information to read so hopefully I got it right. From what I gathered I need something like this cable: http://hakshop.myshopify.com/products/micro-to-micro-otg
 
Would that work with most of the portable amps such as the ibasso ones or would that only work on ones such as the leckerton amps?

Most portable amps require a mini USB, no? In which a micro USB will not work. Leckerton uses micro USB, so the hakshop cable should work just fine in that example.

Couple of us using the Hakshop one with the Leckterton, the Apex Glacier also takes micro USB.

I'll have to see which dac/amp first. I'm leaning towards the iBasso D6. I do recall someone posting some pages back that it works with my phone.

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is these 71 phones should support USB OTG.

(Note that there are several sub-versions of e.g. the Note or the Galaxy S, typically based on country.)
 
So those phones have the hardware for USB OTG and a 5-pin micro-USB connector. And they have a version of Android that supports USB mouse driver / USB keyboard driver / USB mass storage driver typically. 
 
The bad news is, many of those phones did not include stock, also the USB audio driver And, Android phone makers don't have a stellar record of updating the software. Because, they want you to buy a new phone instead. 
 
I thank DanBa for some of the above, and I hope I got it correct. Really his list of proven phones working with proven DACs is where to start. 
 
Personally, my hope is that we can get cyanogenmod excited about this. Like us head-fi fellow geeks, they want to to the right technology thing, just because its the right thing to do. And they do a much better job of updating phones to the latest Android than the phone manufacturers do.

I'll try to suggest some ideas for this. If the CLAS -db had SPDIF input (perhaps in a future/custom version), I'm guessing that an easy way of then making the S3/Note 2 work with it (or any other DAC which accepts SPDIF/Optical) and still be a portable solution would be to use a tiny USB to SPDIF converter?
 
Similarly, if the upcoming CEntrance HiFi M8 doesn't work with the Note2/S3's USB audio output, then there might be some tiny USB to SPDIF/Optical converter which one could put in the chain between the 2?
 
Any comments/suggestions welcome and the only thing I'd like to ask is if anyone knows of any small USB to SPDIF/Optical converters which work with Android JB devices and can ideally convert the signal at 24/96(or even 192)?....assuming stock JB Android is even capable of outputting digital audio at 24/96 or 24/192 without a custom kernel like iBasso's DX100.

Well, I'm listening to my Samsung Galaxy S III with Jelly Bean update now, through the ODAC/O2 combo, and it works fine. 
 
Perhaps the original commenter with his Sprint Galaxy S III has some other issue with his phone on Jelly Bean. My phone is on the T-Mobile network, and USB audio out is working fine. It also worked great on the "Wicked" versions of custom ROMs (ICS based).
