Android phones and USB DACs

The ASUS ZenFone 2 seems like the latest bargain for USB DAC users. This guy is using it with his ZuperDAC: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/zuperdac-portable-hifi-music-anytime-anywhere#/story

It's been tested with a 128Gb Micro SD card. With the 64Gb version, you get the fast-charger and 4Gb of RAM, etc. At $299 shipped (US), it's very tempting. Has anybody any experience yet?

My Epiphany Acoustics ODac and 02 Amp doesn't seem to work with my Note II but my DacMagic Plus works fine, I just need to plug my hub in to the usb charger first then I can disconnect it.
In fact, I think it might be possible to run the DM Plus and the HDMI at the same time through my hub. Has anyone tried this?
Am currently using it to drag and drop 64 Gb from the micro sd card to a 500 gb portable drive I ripped out of an old Archos Media Player that stopped working. And it still played audio from either SD or Disc Drive through bluetooth. So I have a 580 Gb Note II media centre running!

Moto G... But it was my understanding that the new android lollipop came with usb-dac support so it'd work on any phone that had lollipop

Yeah, that's what I thought too. But Sony (and a few others) seemed to have wrecked it instead of featuring it.

Fiio E7 even shows up in the list of dacs known to work with native Android L:

I've just recently got a Nexus 7 2013, so I'll try it out on that and see if it works. I won't mind so much about it not working on Moto G if I can get it to work on Nexus 7 :D

Maybe we could have massive possibilities with a rig like this?

What else do we need? How about an Android phone with dual micro SDXC slots?

I just manually upgraded my Nexus 7 2013 LTE tablet to the official Lollipop 5.1.0. I did a quick check and USB Native Audio seems to work. I used Google Play Music to stream with and it worked. I'll be testing further later on. So far so good.
I tested with a Schiit Modi 2 Uber. I'll fiddle with other DACs later.

did native usb support 24/96 and 24/192 to external dac, or did it downsample?

So far Android's native USB Audio downsamples. If you require Hires, then you can use Onkyo HD player or USBAPP. I'm not a believer in Hirez due to human limitations. IMO the Master and Mixdown determine the results.

Neither my Bifrost Uber or Sennheiser HDVD 800 will connect to my Samsung Tab S since installing Lollypop. Except UPAP will run. Apparently it has its own usb driver.
Tab S worked perfect before Lollypop. Tried a known working powered usb hub and cables To no avail.

I only check this topic every other week and get a head-ache when I try to catch up.

Basically I'd like to get an el-cheapo 7" tablet and / or an Android phone, that can stream audio files from my home-network. Use as a DAP > (OTG cable for power) > DAC.
There's a lot of cheap Android devices @ v4.x, some can  be upgraded, some not.
So I would like to know the 'bottom line' of which version to search for.
What is the current minimum Android version that can pump audio out over USB?

... or is it dependent on the manufacturer brand?

Thanks.

I have a H/P Stream 8 tablet. I paid $179.00 last Christmas and they must be much cheaper now. Runs Windows 8.1and has 32gb and a card slot. Works with my Bifrost uber and hdvd800. Runs Ponoworld, Foobar and Vlc. I stream from a network drive. Off subject but besides wi-fi it also has a cellular antenna and 200MB of free data per month on T-Mobile.

defbear -

Yeah I guess a Windows tablet is an alternative to Android.
I'd prefer a 7~8" tablet anyway, because can see more of your catalog of directories - folders - files on the bigger screen, compared to a mobile phone.
And - there's the option of digital out over the HDMI port.

Yeah tablet is the way to go, much better visibility, the trouble is my Android phone sounds much better than my HP Windows laptop (using TIDAL flac) so not sure if a Windows tablet will be better than an Android tablet, anyone compared?

I tried a Dell Venue 8 Windows 8.1 tablet with an ifi Micro iDSD, and I found that while it was easier to use as far as selecting music etc., I also found the sound to be better from my Samsung Galaxy S4 Android phone using UAPP. On the Dell, I tried foobar2000 and JRiver Media Center, and for some reason I just liked the sound better from the Android phone. It was just more present, more alive. Also, the battery life on the Windows Tablet was poor. I haven't tried an Android tablet, since I don't have one.

Lately I've been experimenting with a Raspberry Pi 2 running Runeaudio, using either the Android phone or an ipad Mini connected wirelessly to the Pi 2 to select music. It sounds as good as the Android, but obviously is not as portable as the Android phone alone. The reason I use the Pi is because I can more easily access a portable USB hard drive with that setup than with the Samsung S4.
