while the UAPP Trial apk doesn't even install.

I presume you turned on "Install from unknown sources" in your phone's settings?

Yes of course.

I can install just any apk but this one (UAPP Trial) doesn't install. I mailed UAPP support and here is their response

From Davy Wentzler of UAPP
Dear customer,

Thank you for contacting us. According to our information, the Desire
820 doesn't support USB host.

Kind regards,

Davy
eXtream Software Development

I can use it with Onkyo HF Player though.

Question for all you SME's in this thread: "Is there an OTG cable/adapter that has both memory (SD or microSD) reader and a micro or Type A female USB and can be used simultaneously?"  I ask because there are a few android smartphones that I'm looking at which supports OTG, but doesn't have an external memory slot (go figure) and would like to have the ability for the phone to read the music on the external card, but playback through a connected USB DAC like a D3 or Microstreamer.

I'm not well versed in USB OTG design/implementation/protocals, but my gut feeling is that it's currently not possible. Makes sense if the data pipe is one-way only at a time, but then again, I'm no expert on the subject.

This looks cool, but I do not know how it performs simultaneously with both SD Card and USB DAC

Might be a solution for galaxy S6, where no external SD is supported

EDIT: Ordered it, lets wait and see.

Thanks. Looks like it would work.  My concern is when using a card reader USB DAC at the same time, will the data flow or bandwidth between the two devices effect the sound quality coming from the USB DAC.  I guess, I'll know in a few weeks when I get everything and discover for myself.

Thanks. Looks like it would work.  My concern is when using a card reader USB DAC at the same time, will the data flow or bandwidth between the two devices effect the sound quality coming from the USB DAC.  I guess, I'll know in a few weeks when I get everything and discover for myself.

I am exploring a similar setup, please see my earlier post for some results using a couple of combined hubs+card readers: http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/android-phones-and-usb-dacs/6630#post_11534741.

I did not notice any obvious sound quality issues (drop-outs or similar) when using a Y-cable to provide supplementary power to the hub+card reader, but without extra power you often need to plug in the equipment in the right order to avoid error or glitches due to drawing too much power from the USB port of the phone. I think the Delock hub+reader had somewhat less trouble in this regard than the Transcend one.

I cannot say if the sound quality is impacted in more subtle ways. At least I did not notice a difference whether playing back from the internal memory of the phone or from the card in the hub+reader. I guess theoretically there might be a difference in the jitter if the USB implementation of any of the components (phone, DAC, hub+reader) are really bad or really good, but whether one can hear that is another story.

Edit: Come to think of it, also the different power requirements of the DACs might impact the sound quality. If the DAC requires more power to sound optimal than the phone and hub+reader can provide, there might be a drop in the sound quality. The Y-cable to provide additional power to the hub, or a powered hub, or even another Y-cable to provide extra power to the DAC as well (if you really want to cover all eventualities) might be the cure in these situations.

The phone, card, reader+hub all may impact whether the combinations works due to e.g. different power requirements, so the only way to be sure seems to be to try it out.

Hope this helps.

Testing Geek Out 450 and sharing some experiences in case useful for others.

There seemed to be relatively few reports on whether GO works different phones. Also, UAPP lists the compatibility as highly phone dependent.

-------------

Sony Xperia Z3 compact with stock Android 4.4.4. and UAPP/Spotify/Walkman/Tidal/Deezer --> USB-OTG-cable --> Geek Out 450 --> Amp:

Does not work. Either gives a "too much USB power draw" error or just fails to recognize the DAC and in any case GO does not produce any sound.

--------------

Sony Xperia Z3 compact with stock Android 4.4.4. and UAPP/Spotify/Walkman/Tidal/Deezer --> USB-OTG-Y-cable with additional power --> Geek Out 450 --> Amp:

Can be made to work but really tricky for UAPP:

1) You need to first connect the additional power to the GO (via the Y-cable), and only then gonnect the GO to the phone. Well, obviously, to work around the power requirement.

2) I cannot make it work with UAPP right away. The UAPP does ask permission to use the DAC (GO), but then produces slight crackling sound only or fails to initialize the DAC. I have tried all the UAPP USB tweaks, buffers etc. one by one and then all of them on and finally some combinations (although not all as there are quite many of those), but no luck so far.

However, the other players on my phone do work and produce the sound out of the GO if I start them before UAPP(!).

They do not work after trying UAPP. Spotify has volume control, the others not, and GO shows Spotify at 48kHz and the others at 44,1kHz. Guess the Spotify player is using the Android USB framework and the others somehow connecting directly via Sony specific drivers.

Here is where it gets tricky: It is possible to get the UAPP to work by the following procedure:
0) plug in the your headphones to the GO
1) plug in power to the GO
2) plug the GO to the phone
3) start Walkman and set a song playing (careful with your headphoes and ears as the GO output is at full volume!) and stop playback. Exit Walkman by back button but do not kill the Walkman application.
4) start UAPP and start playing a song. Typically the UAPP either does not ask permissions for the USB DAC or cannot initialize it. Go back from UAPP, confirming exiting UAPP.
5) start UAPP again, the USB dac permission is asked for, and the USB DAC is initialized.
6) hit play and start enjoying the music!

I have tested several shortcuts and variations to the above procedure but so far did not find one that works reliably.

Another oddity requiring the step 0) above is that if I plug or unplug the phones from the GO, the USB connection to the phone is often lost, and then its back to the crackling with the UAPP.

----------

Would appreciate your input if anyone has experience with Geek Out:

Has anybody been able to get the Geek Out to work with Sony Xperia Z series and UAPP without the need for the above procedure, and if so, what kind of tweaks to the phone or UAPP settings were needed?

Or with any phone with Android 4.x and UAPP, for that matter?
