Android phones and USB DACs

I have an Aune T1 usb Amp/Dac and used OTG cable to connect it and device says USB headphones for a second and it works right off. My question is does that mean it's working for what we're trying to achieve getting better quality sound.

Yes, connecting a USB OTG cable to a nVidia Shield tablet will switch the tablet to USB host mode, so that the tablet can output digital audio streams to a USB audio device like USB DAC or USB headphones.

If your music files are ripped from CDs (i.e. 16/44.1 music files), the best sound quality should be got with the USB Audio Player PRO (UAPP) app for at least one reason: as UAPP doesn’t use the Android media player framework, it doesn’t perform 44.1-to-48 resampling (i.e. other music players have to interface with the Android media player framework, which can only output 16/48 digital audio streams for the time being).

hi DanBa,

just want to clarify a couple of points about the Nexus 5:

your google doc shows the Audioquest dragonfly working with Android L/Nexus 5 but from what I could make out from the linked post(s) it doesn't support the volume control, so you either have full volume or no volume. Is this still the current understanding?

Secondly, Nexus 5 running CM11 seems to work with most DACs, but is this limited to the 16/48 re-sample or can CM11 output the same as the file? (obviously limited by the DAC capabilities)

cheers :)  am very happy to have finally got to the last page of this thread, has taken about 2 weeks on and off

For Nexus 5 running CM11, if you are NOT using UAPP, you are limited to 16/48 re-sample.  If you use UAPP, it can output the same as the file.

thanks Pappy, but I see now that my question wasn't complete:

Will the CM11 output other apps and system sounds as 16/48  USB-audio-out while retaining the source sample rate/depth when using UAPP app?

I'm interested in having all sounds routed to a USB DAC, but I think 16/48 for internet radio and other apps is fine, with for example UAPP dealing with just my flacs. This will be for in-car and I want to get rid of using the 3.5mm jack while it is mounted.

I don't understand this volume control issue, because at least the digital volume control of a music player such as Neutron could be used.

Anyway, in a USB car audio system, the DragonFly should be used as a USB DAC in full volume:
Android device >> DragonFly USB DAC >> car audio amp >> speakers

Very likely: UAPP should be able to run on a CM11-powered device because UAPP is running on the CM11S-powered OnePlus One.

Your selected USB DAC should be compatible with the native CM11 USB audio and with the xTream USB audio of UAPP.

A likely improvement:
"This new OnePlus One OTA also enhances the phone's music resolution playback by supporting 24 bit 96/192KHz FLAC, ALAC, and WAV files without resampling."

from reading this thread I got the impression that the DragonFly "hijacked" the player's volume changes and applied it to the DAC's analogue volume circuit. I got the impression that in-app digital volume wouldn't work (as this would negate the benefit of the analogue control)

You are right about it not mattering in-car, but I forgot to say i'd be using it as a normal headphone amp as well, both on the Nexus 5 and on windows desktops/laptops, and so I would need a volume somewhere in the chain.

Lenovo's new Atom based tablet the Tab S8 works with OTG cable with Poweramp and HRT Microstreamer.  Sounded pretty nice powering Sony's NEW Z7   (hope that is the right Model #) headphones at Can Jam.

Although with the Blue Mo-Fi cans got some weird snaps and almost stuttering, no other cans did this, could it be to some dps circuitry?

Can anyone tell me if Kit Kat has volume limited and can it be defeated?  Seems I had to go pretty high on the volume to get the HRT to a fairly loud level with a number of cans.

I have rooted my Nexus 5 so I can apply a patch to the volume (amp section?) which loudens everything, but this is using headphones direct from the 3.5mm jack (Philips SHE9800) but I think the HRT microstreamer  uses the volume on the device to control the analogue amp in the Microstreamer.

Surely this means full volume on the device is full volume on the amp section of the MS?

The audio bitstream out the USB shouldn't be affected by any volume settings on the device?

The volume of the AudioQuest DragonFly or the HRT microStreamer can be controlled:

. by the UAPP software volume control (i.e. digital volume control) or
. by the UAPP hardware volume control (i.e. digitally analog volume control)

anyone yet have a GeekOut DAC working with UAPP and plain vanilla kit kat?
