Android phones and USB DACs

Heh, you know, I figured, what the hell, and plugged my uDac2 without a powered hub into my Moto X a few minutes ago. Ended up working like a charm! So I do hope this is in fact just a Samsung design flaw. But people should still be careful, in general, not to try DACs that have a power hungry reputation on anything irreplaceable.

The FiiO E18 portable DAC/Amp doesn't draw much current and never hurt my S3, Note 3 or iPod Touch 5G.
When it comes to the GS3, it's Caveat Emptor

Looks like Android 5.0 will have native USB audio!  Probably not overcome the 16 bit limitation (thus, still requiring UAPP for 24 bit playback), but if true, it will be nice to have all kinds of options for ROMS, notably including stock.

Could someone please explain what is "UAPP" ?
Or point me to info online somewhere ?

Thanks.

Apparently Samsung messed up on the USB hardware, when a USB device draws above a certain level of current the S3 can self destruct, hence the powered Hub protects the S3.

Regarding the Galaxy S3, are there any portable dacs that can be used safely without requiring a hub/ y-cable/ juice pack? eg Hifimediy?

Any other S3 users care to comment?

I can vouch for the FiiO E18, it didn't fry my S3 and I used it often. Just use an OTG cable, no Y required, it came with two flimsy short cables.
My desktop DAC, well that had the bad outcome.

Ah ha, thanks for the clarification.  So for many portable DACs, it shouldn't be a problem, then.

Fiio E07k and E17 also work well with my S3 (SGH-i747m) and are cheaper than the Fiio E18.  Just turn off USB charging on the Fiio so it doesn't suck extra juice out of your S3.  You will need to buy a USB OTG cable (Fiio L15 USB OTG cable) since it's not included in the box like the E18 does.

Look forward to your impressions.  I've been using a Hifimediy U2 sabre (Asynch) in my desktop set up for a while and it punches massively above its weight (with a linear p/s).

Hi. I can't see any pictures online of the L15.  Does it have a regular size female socket at the non-phone end, like most OTG cables?

I see the android model has a micro usb plug.   Are you meant to connect to a usb-otg cable or directly into the phone?   (assume you would need a usb-otg cable for it to work?)

you connect directly to the phone, but to get the real potential you need an amp before the earphone to sound better, this is what i read about, but mine didnt arrived yet..
