DAC wise what would you recommend?

Is cost an object?

Nothing is wrong with the gungnir

There're other / better DACs out there - some at a higher cost and some not.  IMO don't be tied down to the gungnir just because it's made by Schiit.

At an even lower cost I would go with the XDA-2.  Of course it dosn't match esthetic (looks) wise, but if cost is an object - you get more for less.

Cost for me isn't an object, but within reason (i will be getting the lcd-3 which I've auditioned with the bifrost/lyr). For instance I'd get the gungnir over a $1400 dac (v800) thats just a little less coarse. I'm looking at a significant upgrade, but not at the expense of blindly wasting money

So the XDA-2?

The NAD M51 would be sensible to check out, then. :)

So why the gungnir over the V800?  Have you heard both and compared?  Or just going at it blindly?  Just asking?

He says the V800 is just a little less coarse - so I would guess he has heard both. I, owning both, would disagree with the V800 being any way near "coarse". But, we hear different things.

Edit: Wow - this thread picked up speed - need to use quotes.

Based on the XDA-1 and the improvements they made.  It's a solid choice IMO of course.  You get a preamp with analog volume control, also the USB implantation has improved as well.

Sweet man, I'll look into it. And the XDA-2 will be better then the Gungir?

I'm going at this completely blind. I can't even listen to the rig in my sig anymore now that I've heard the lcd-3 (its too bright, one-dimensional). I just mentioned the v800 as an example, I have no clue if it's coarse or not. I guess what I mean is I'm looking for massive improvement thats also a bang for the buck. I'd rather spend, $1500-2000 on an amp/dac combo than $3500 if I can help it... I'm looking at the gungnir/mjolnir or gungnir/soloist as it stands right now. Do you think I'd be okay with either (i'm aware of the aggressive vs. laid back debate on both amps)?
