AKG K702 (The Classic) vs. K612 Pro (The Upstart) – Review and Comparison

They're an even better deal in the UK - £120. That's cheaper than the ATH-M50 that everyone blindly recommends. Just under the K550 too.

Updated UK price for the K612, now £87 on Amazon, an exceptional bargain. I agree with you completely about the Ath M50, possibly the most overhyped HP ever, doesn't even reach K612's ankles! It was the first supposedly mid-fi HP I bought, five years ago, before I realised how good other HPs actually sound!

The K702 is currently on at £115 on amazon.co.uk, the K612 is still £87.95. Hopefully someone is going to grab a bargain!

No, the K612 is smoother in the treble area than the K240. That's my complaint with the K240 as well. The more I listen to them, the more they seem like a better K240 to me.

I appreciate that e all have different hearing, but I just can't understand all the love for the K240 on head-fi. I auditioned a pair not long after getting used to a pair of original K271 studio and couldn't believe how artificial the K240 sounded, especially that awfully woolly bass! I returned them after a week of intense listening
and then bought the K612 and the difference is night and day in favour of the wonderful K612

Concerning the comparo, @ekvilibrijum1, DT 880 Pro vs. K612 would be a parallel showdown.  I have both models shortlisted for audition for a new headset for the Hot Rod gPC, which carries the ASUS® XONAR® STX™ previously in the CM1630-06, and am considering adding the K702 to the audition, as all three meet the 120 Ω minimum impedance I've set. (The STX may be accelerating the failure of the already-due-for-replacement-on-hours Plantronics® GAMECOM® 380, as the Texas Instruments® TPA6120A2 runs hot even on the ≤ 32 Ω setting.

What is better for progressive metal? i like wide soundstage, details and sparation between instruments.
Probably the K702. Angled pads give more stage width and the K702 has a little less warmth, so gives impression of more detail.

702 is too bright? Not painfull at big volume?
"Bright" can mean many things, depending on what sond signature one likes. Then, the final sound depends on the other components in your system. I like clear, transparent signatures, but I also want them to be rich in harmonics. K702 works very well for me on Vali 2 with a number of different tubes.

Oh tnx, a lot of people talking about 612 have wide soundstage like hd800. This isnt right?

Most of the AKGs have a wide-ish stage - but it is oblong (L/R) and not really deep. Hd800S is more circular and definitely larger (IMO)

whos wider? 612 or 702? or 7xx?

Already answered above - K702 has a wider stage than the K612 due to the slight angle on the pads - effectively angles the drivers.
