I got mine today! (Damn Jamey got to listen to them first.) First, it should be said they are very good; right up there with the 650, 600, and beyer 880. Very good. While he 650 lean to the side of too warm and the 800 lies to the bright side the 701 pretty much splits the difference, and I would consider it pretty darn neutral.

There does seem to be a bit of what I term "hardness" in them. I'll admit that I am quite intollerant of any form of harshness, but it does seem to me that the 701 is slightly lacking in "refinement" and sound a tad ragged as a result. Don't read this as a steep critisism, though, the best headphone reference in my book is the UE10 and there is no full-sized can comes any closer than the 701 in my book. The 650 IS a tad to soft and withdrawen, the 880 IS too bright, all these cans have some slight flaw or other. The 701 is DAMN good, and wil be a staple with headphone fans for a long time to come. Great job, AKG! Heartily recommended.

This will be a short post as I'd rather listen than type. See ya!

Holy smokes Tyll, thanks for the impression. When all the other vendors are refraining from any detailed impressions, you don't hold back.

How's the bass?

And when is Headroom expecting to ship out the preorders?

(you can infer I have a preorder in the queue)

Dang, I think Tyll got MY pair

Waiting for Headroom to get theirs in, I'm on "the list" too.

I want to see if these make me become a member of Team AKG. My Sony SA-5K's make some real purty music with my Dynahi, it'll be a great comparison between that and the 701!

I hate all of you owners!!! I just called headroom this afternoon and they are already out of stock! I have to wait until the end of the month just to see if the new batch are coming in yet! TTVJ is also already sold out! ARGHHH!

Jorge at headroom says that the pre-order special should last a little while longer yet (maybe up to christmas)... ah well...

i always recomended akg's as a sound between senns and grados. now they have a can between the 650 and rs1 again! hooray! i still think they look cheesy and were heavy. but i will still probably get them once they hit actual store shelves. anyways, i think 240's with a few mods are nothing to sneeze at either. granted these are in a different league though.

Hi, Tyll --

Is it a reasonable deduction that the 701s have very little burn in as yet? My experience with 2 pairs of 501s was that they were not only ragged, but awful in many different ways out of the box and required at least a couple of hundred hours to mature reasonably, and kept improving long after that.

Perhaps the hardness and ragged edges you experienced will smooth out with lots more play time?

OMG, this is a very bad news for my wallet.
