AKG K167 TIËSTO - Discussion, Impression, Review & Appreciation Thread

Will do. I do have the E11 amp that I use with my AKG 240s but I really do not like the sound it's giving me with my iPod. The highs are waaay to high. Any advice on how to fix this or is it just the quality of the amp?

I have not heard the K67 but from what I have read it is not on the level sound quality wise as the K167. It will be more portable due the shorter straight cable. But I will say I hesitated to get the K167 due it's coiled cable as I generally hate that style of cable. But I actually am finding it to a lot more portable than I would have thought due to it's lightness and it's partially straight design.

One last question before I order these puppies, are the K67 better than the K167 for portable use? And how do they compare to the K518 and the new K618? Whoops that was 2 questions heh.

Nope. I have the K701 and D2000 and K167 sounds nothing like either. K167 is more like a less-refined K550.

Ah ok - I've never heard the K550 before so how would you describe the sound? The reason I said that is that from reading this thread it seems like people have been saying Denon like bass response except tighter and less subbass with upper end akg like treble detail and extension.

I find the K167 bass much cleaner, tighter and more transparent than the Denon. I find the K167and K550 share a lot in common but the K550 has a more refined, natural midrange and a little more open on top. The K167 can sound rather honky and a tad nasal. The D2000 is a nice headphone but I found it had a "pudding" kind of character to it.

I am in pretty much complete agreement of Beagle's assessment. I do think the the K167 does have a bit more oomph in the bass department as compared to the K550 though. I would say the bass of the K167 excels in the exact way the mids and treble excels in the K550. So if your music choice solidly relies on bass to sound correct the K167 is a better choice but if your music is predominantly based on the midrange and to a lesser extent the treble then I think the K550 is a better choice. If AKG did the unthinkable and made a headphone that has the bass of the K167 and the mids and treble of the K550 I would be in headphone nirvana (K267 possibly??).

Other than that if you have a smaller head the K550 may not fit comfortably, if you have a large head the K167 may be to uncomfortable and prone to possibly breaking. The K167 does have a slightly smaller cup size than the K550 so it may be uncomfortable for anyone with larger than average ears.

Budget wise the K167 is about $100 cheaper than the K550. If you can afford the difference in cost and want the sound of the K550 I think it's worth the added cost plus I think the K550 is built with better materials and cables. But if your budget is tight the K167 is a darn fine headphone worth every penny and is one of the best headphones in it's price bracket.

Same here. No bass. Wasn't really impressed.

I HAVE been comparing these k167 to the m100 and m80 I also have on hand....
I have to say these have the best quality bass I have herd yet.
The quality I like about the bass is after I broke them in took only a day and it has WEIGHT without being overdone like the others. Clean large perfect non muddy bass wich totally does not interfere with the rest of the music.

But that is only the bass.
And the other two headphones excell in the mids.
The highs are also stellar alot of presence and details.
I have just ordered the k67 as I need more portability and these barely make it for every day commute so I may sell or just keep depending how the k67 sounds as I will miss this sound.
The problem for me is the mids are presented slightly laid back yet only noticeable when compared to the m100 & m80...
These mids remind me of sony v6 & my ath esw9 in terms of laid back,
But much more clear which makes overall presentation polished and enjoyable at mid to high levels.
At low levels not as involving but I am running un amped thru a Galaxy Note 2 phone.
Personally I think the m80 are most balanced yet slightly forward for me.
I love bass but not bSs head but heavy and large and detailed and real like these.

IMO, M-100 or PSB M4U2 is the best on the market for portable use without a separate amp.  However, in fairness, I have not yet heard the K167.
